Key Responsibilities:

Reporting directly to the Dean of Residential Student Services, the Sustainability Program Manager will provide administrative and collaborative leadership for designated student services and program areas related to sustainability initiatives and education. This role will involve collaboration with the HRL (Housing & Residence Life) Facilities Planning and Operations team, including external relations, student services, and overall program management. The Manager will establish and monitor key performance indicators that align with Duke's Climate Commitment and develop standard operating procedures in partnership with essential internal and external stakeholders to ensure excellence in the residential experience.

Specific Duties:
  1. Enhance the student residential experience through effective sustainability practices, emphasizing intentional education and outreach. Establish uniform standards and protocols across campuses in collaboration with key stakeholders. Develop and maintain tools, metrics, and indicators to assess progress towards departmental sustainability objectives.

  1. Lead a multi-year initiative to reduce energy and water consumption while improving waste diversion strategies across all campuses. Formulate a sustainability master plan in direct collaboration with HRL Facilities Planning and Operations, FMD Sanitation, and Recycling, in alignment with Duke's sustainability commitments.

Foster and maintain effective collaborative relationships with departments outside of formal authority that provide services to residents, including Student Affairs Facilities Planning & Operations, Facilities Management Department, Sustainable Duke, Landscape Services, Duke Dining, and third-party service providers. Regularly engage with DEI focus groups, Residential Education staff, New Student & Family Programs, Quad Councils, and Duke Student Government to understand their needs. Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy, including digital platforms, news articles, and various outreach methods to enhance awareness and support for Duke Housing's sustainability initiatives.

  1. Represent the department in divisional and University committees, including key stakeholder meetings and operational committees.

  1. Compile relevant statistical data related to service experiences and renewal needs, assess KPIs, and utilize data to inform departmental strategy, student outreach, and campus planning.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree along with a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required; a degree in Environmental Science or Sustainability and experience within a complex organization such as Higher Education is highly preferred.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills, including report-writing and presentations.
  • Active listening skills with the capability to facilitate problem-solving, decision-making, and goal-setting in group settings.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Proven success in cross-unit collaboration and interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • Advanced proficiency in sustainability practices and principles.
