About the Role

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) Protocol Coordinator to join our team. As a key member of our Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance, you will play a critical role in supporting the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and university stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide administrative support for incoming protocols and amendments, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Work closely with researchers to develop complete and accurate protocols and amendments for IACUC review.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant regulations, policies, and guidelines related to animal research and biosafety.
  • Conduct random and for-cause reviews of researchers' documentation and procedures to ensure compliance with approved IACUC protocols and federal regulations.
  • Investigate reported issues on behalf of the IACUC and inform the committee of any protocol or investigator non-compliance activities.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and practices designed to promote compliant practices and mitigate risk.
  • Apply knowledge of IACUC-related regulations and guidelines to day-to-day operations.
  • Serve as backup to the ACUP Sr. Administrative Assistant and other team members as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a biological sciences field or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of animal care techniques, including blood collection, drug administration, and aseptic technique.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex documents, such as IACUC protocols and federal regulations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience with standard office software and Adobe Acrobat.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working experience with or training in problem-solving and negotiation.
  • Working knowledge of relevant guides and regulations, such as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
  • American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or higher level.
  • Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) credentials.
