Job Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking an Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) Protocol Coordinator to enhance the support for ACUP, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and various stakeholders within the institution. This role is vital in promoting ethical practices and ensuring adherence to research regulations.
The ACUP Protocol Coordinator will be part of a committed team dedicated to ensuring the humane treatment and welfare of animal subjects involved in research and educational activities. The Coordinator will collaborate with university stakeholders and IACUC members, who include professionals from diverse backgrounds, to assess and ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Conducting administrative reviews of incoming protocols and amendments.
• Assisting researchers in crafting comprehensive and precise protocols for IACUC evaluation.
• Staying informed about state and federal regulations, policies, and ethical guidelines related to animal research and biosafety.
• Performing random and for-cause evaluations of researchers' documentation and practices, including interviews to verify compliance with approved protocols.
• Investigating reported compliance issues on behalf of the IACUC.
• Reporting any non-compliance activities to the IACUC.
• Contributing to the formulation and execution of policies and procedures that promote compliance and mitigate risks.
• Applying knowledge of IACUC regulations to daily operations.
• Serving as a backup for administrative support during peak times or absences.
• This position will involve site visits to various facilities and observation of different animal species, necessitating the ability to navigate diverse terrains and stand for extended periods.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Proven knowledge of animal care practices, including blood collection, drug administration, and aseptic techniques, along with an understanding of normal animal behavior and handling.
• Ability to interpret complex documents such as IACUC protocols and regulatory guidelines.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for conveying technical information effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to engage with a diverse range of individuals.
• Capability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently.
• Experience in planning and organizational skills to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in standard office software, including word processing and spreadsheets.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in problem-solving and negotiation.
• Familiarity with key guides and regulations related to animal care and use.
• Experience handling sensitive and confidential information.
• Certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or higher.
• Credentials as a Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA).
Additional Information
This position may offer a hybrid work schedule, with expectations for in-office presence. The successful candidate will undergo a criminal conviction check.
