About the Role
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) Protocol Coordinator to join our team. As a key member of our Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance, you will play a critical role in supporting the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and university stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support for incoming protocols and amendments, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Work closely with researchers to develop complete and accurate protocols and amendments for IACUC review.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant regulations, policies, and guidelines related to animal research and biosafety.
- Conduct random and for-cause reviews of researchers' documentation and procedures to ensure compliance with approved IACUC protocols and federal regulations.
- Investigate reported issues on behalf of the IACUC and inform the committee of any protocol or investigator non-compliance activities.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and practices designed to promote compliant practices and mitigate risk.
- Apply knowledge of IACUC-related regulations and guidelines to day-to-day operations.
- Serve as backup to the ACUP Sr. Administrative Assistant and other team members as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a biological sciences field or related discipline.
- Demonstrated knowledge of animal care techniques, including blood collection, drug administration, and aseptic technique.
- Ability to read and interpret complex documents, including IACUC protocols and federal and state regulations.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience with standard office software and Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working experience with or training in problem-solving and negotiation.
- Working knowledge of relevant guides and regulations, including the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and USDA Animal Welfare Regulations.
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) or higher level.
- Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) credentials.
