Job Overview
The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for an Animal Care and Use Program (ACUP) Protocol Coordinator to enhance the operations of the ACUP, the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and various stakeholders within the institution. This role is pivotal in promoting ethical research practices and ensuring adherence to regulatory standards.
The ACUP Protocol Coordinator will be an integral part of a committed team dedicated to the humane treatment and welfare of animal subjects involved in research and educational activities. The Coordinator will collaborate with university stakeholders and IACUC members, which include peers, veterinarians, non-scientists, and community representatives, to ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Conduct administrative reviews of incoming protocols and amendments.
• Collaborate with researchers to formulate comprehensive and accurate protocols for IACUC evaluation.
• Stay informed on state and federal regulations, as well as institutional policies and ethical guidelines concerning animal research and biosafety.
• Perform random and for-cause audits of researchers' documentation and procedures, which involves interviewing relevant personnel to confirm compliance with approved IACUC protocols and federal regulations.
• Investigate any reported compliance issues on behalf of the IACUC.
• Notify the IACUC of any non-compliance activities related to protocols or investigators.
• Assist in the development and execution of policies and procedures aimed at promoting compliance and minimizing risks.
• Apply knowledge of IACUC-related regulations to daily operations.
• Provide support to the ACUP Senior Administrative Assistant and other team members during high-volume periods or absences.
• This position may require site visits to various university facilities and observation of diverse animal species in controlled environments, necessitating the ability to navigate different terrains and stand for extended periods.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Proven knowledge of animal care techniques, including blood collection, drug administration, and aseptic methods, as well as the ability to recognize normal animal behavior and handle research or teaching animals appropriately.
• Ability to interpret complex documents such as IACUC protocols and relevant regulations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills for conveying technical information effectively.
• Excellent interpersonal and customer service abilities, with a capacity to engage with a diverse range of individuals.
• Demonstrated capability to work collaboratively within a team and independently.
• Proven experience in effective planning and organizational skills to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects.
• Proficiency in standard office software, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation tools, as well as Adobe Acrobat.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience or training in problem-solving and negotiation techniques.
• Familiarity with guidelines and regulations such as the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA Animal Welfare Regulations, or AAALAC International standards.
• Experience handling sensitive and confidential information.
• Certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) level or higher.
• Credentials as a Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA).
Additional Information
This position may offer a hybrid work schedule, with expectations for in-office presence. The successful candidate will undergo a criminal conviction check.
