About the Role

Miller Johnson is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer to lead our business operations and drive growth. As a key firmwide leader, you will be responsible for managing day-to-day operations, building high-performing administrative functions, and delivering financial performance ahead of competitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Managing Member and Management Committee to understand the firm's vision for revenue and profitability growth, identify operational objectives, and direct administrative resources to achieve those objectives.
  • Ensure the firm attracts and develops experienced administrative staff who execute on core initiatives and contribute to central goals.
  • Proactively identify and recommend innovative methodologies, technologies, and industry best practices to support the firm's vision, strategy, and objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong lines of communication across the firm, ensuring that different constituencies are regularly apprised of operations and financial performance.
  • Safeguard and foster a collaborative culture committed to professional excellence and client service, pursuing DE&I objectives, and implementing engagement strategies.
  • Oversee office space planning, lease negotiations, and building operations.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 15 to 20 years of executive and operational leadership experience, with a background in Human Resources, Information Technology, Finance/Accounting, and Brand/Communications.
  • Growth mindset, ideally within the legal industry or other professional service business.
  • Experience scaling businesses with revenues greater than $50M and less than $500M.
  • Sharp business acumen, strategic finance, and analytical skills, with the ability to develop comprehensive strategic operating and business plans.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to inspire and influence others, and generate buy-in across all levels of the organization.
  • Experience leading successful change management initiatives and driving continuous improvement, innovation, and optimization of business operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of diversity and inclusion best practices, with a proven record of implementing DE&I initiatives.
  • Proven success in recruiting, mentoring, managing, and developing staff.
  • An undergraduate degree in business administration or a related field is required; MBA or other advanced degrees are preferred.
  • Forward-thinking, growth-oriented approach, with highly developed diplomatic skills and the ability to understand the political subtleties endemic to a professional services firm.
  • Collaborative, curious, consensus builder, adept at leading change, and open-minded and flexible.
