The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is in search of a Chief Legal Officer dedicated to advancing the SPLC's mission of promoting racial justice.

The Chief Legal Officer will offer legal advice and direction to the SPLC leadership, ensuring that the organization’s legal rights are safeguarded and that all operations comply with applicable laws. This role involves providing strategic advice, consultation, and support to the President/CEO, the Executive Team, and the Board of Directors on a wide array of legal matters that are essential to fulfilling the Center's mission.

Ideal Candidate Profile

Experienced Leader. Proven experience in advising executive leadership and board members on legal matters, with a history of translating strategic insights and legal analysis into actionable plans and outcomes.

Team Builder. A skilled manager with a successful track record in leading, mentoring, and developing teams. A clear communicator of objectives, policies, and processes, always prioritizing the SPLC's interests in all communications and decisions.

Informed Advocate. Deep understanding of the U.S. political landscape, cultural dynamics, social movements, race relations, and the socio-economic environment, particularly in the Deep South.

Legal Authority. Extensive knowledge across various legal fields, including but not limited to employment law, non-profit regulations, privacy and security, and compliance issues. Exceptional legal research and writing capabilities.

Clear Communicator. Proficient in conveying information effectively in both written and verbal formats.

Ethical Professional. Unquestionable integrity and ethics, with strong emotional intelligence, a solid moral compass, and the ability to navigate challenging decisions with a sense of humor and a positive demeanor.

Results-Oriented. Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic, and innovative environment while meeting deadlines.

Collaborative Partner. Capacity to work efficiently and collaboratively with diverse teams.

Key Responsibilities

Provide Legal Counsel on corporate governance matters for both the 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) Boards.

Act as Secretary of the c3 Board, ensuring accurate documentation of governance decisions and discussions.

Collaborate with the President/CEO to advise the executive team on legal issues related to strategic objectives, while identifying and implementing risk management and compliance strategies.

Guide human resources on investigations, employee disciplinary matters, and the interpretation and drafting of HR policies.

Provide legal advice across various areas of law, including procurement, labor, employment, intellectual property, media law, and regulatory matters.

Review and approve contracts and agreements with external entities.

Oversee litigation and dispute resolution processes involving the organization.

Select, retain, and manage external legal services, including pro bono assistance, and serve as a liaison with outside counsel.

Ensure compliance with all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations, including those governing 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations.

Maintain the highest professional and ethical standards, adhering to both the letter and spirit of applicable laws.

Represent the organization at public or external meetings.

Actively Promote the SPLC's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Collaborate with communications and development teams to ensure compliance with applicable laws in communication strategies.

Manage a team, providing mentorship and coaching to support their work.

Conduct performance reviews and oversee staff development.

Perform additional duties as assigned that fall within the scope of this role.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience advising executive officers and board members on legal matters, with a proven ability to translate strategic thinking into actionable results;
  • At least 7 years of managerial experience leading a team of professionals, focusing on performance management and professional development;
  • Juris Doctorate Degree.

Compensation & Additional Information

This is an exempt position with a minimum starting salary of $243,739.00 annually, commensurate with experience.

Work Designation Options

This role offers the following work designations:

  • Local Remote: Work remotely with expectations to attend work-related activities at SPLC offices or in operational states.
  • Telework: Work at an SPLC office at least three days per week, with the option to work two days from an alternative location.
  • Remote Distant: Work remotely without expectations to be in SPLC offices, with occasional meetings in operational states.

This position reports to the President/CEO.

Special Considerations

This role is performed under standard office conditions and does not involve strenuous physical demands.
