Position Available:

Chief Scientific Officer at ECO Magazine. ECO Magazine is a leading publication dedicated to marine research, education, and community engagement.

We are at the forefront of addressing global oceanic challenges. Our work encompasses the exploration of dynamic marine systems, including biodiversity, environmental conditions, and coastal economies. We leverage our regional significance to adapt to environmental changes and are committed to the sustainability of marine ecosystems and the communities reliant on them.

The Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at ECO Magazine will oversee a multidisciplinary team of esteemed scientists conducting marine research aimed at enhancing the understanding and stewardship of marine ecosystems—from their physical dynamics to the communities they support.

The CSO will utilize a systems approach to establish scientific priorities, execute research initiatives, develop collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges, and influence discussions surrounding climate change and ecosystem sustainability at various levels.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will become part of a dynamic and innovative management team that values a collaborative culture in strategic planning, policy development, and decision-making, striving for practical solutions and knowledge dissemination through creative thinking.


Key Responsibilities:
Lead a team of distinguished scientists in marine research to enhance understanding and stewardship of marine ecosystems—from physical dynamics to community interactions.

Core Activities Include:
Advance ECO Magazine's scientific leadership in marine research at local, national, and international levels.
Establish scientific priorities in response to emerging marine resource challenges and opportunities, aligning with the organization's mission and strategic goals.
Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the long-term stability of the Research department's budget and secure funding for scientific initiatives.
Support and guide large-scale proposals that promote interdisciplinary collaboration within ECO Magazine and with external partners.
Oversee the Oceans Data Products team, utilizing innovative techniques and technologies to transform complex data into actionable insights for decision-makers.
Foster a stimulating and safe environment for the Research department through direct supervision, mentoring, and budget management.
Work closely with leaders of other core program areas to enhance program impact and ensure synergy with Research activities.

Maintain an active personal research program that is relevant and impactful in marine science and contributes to ECO Magazine's strategic objectives.

Core Activities Include:
Maintain a research lab while balancing CSO responsibilities.
Publish influential scientific research.
Communicate research findings to various audiences through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and other media.
Participate in leadership roles on scientific councils at local, state, regional, national, and international levels in marine and climate sciences.

Contribute to the innovative leadership and collaborative environment of a progressive nonprofit organization.

Core Activities Include:
Serve as a member of the management team, contributing to the design and achievement of ECO Magazine's strategic impact.
Provide oversight of the evolving strategic plan from a research perspective.
Champion strategies to enhance diversity within the research team and promote equity in scientific participation and benefits.
Contribute to organizational policy and decision-making to support the fiscal health and sustainability of the organization.
Encourage innovative thinking to achieve practical solutions and knowledge transfer.
Collaborate with the Development team to communicate ongoing research efforts and engage key donors supporting scientific initiatives.

Represent ECO Magazine and its research programs externally to share knowledge, leverage relationships, and enhance impact.

Core Activities Include:
Collaborate with the Communications team to effectively represent research activities to the public and interpret scientific findings for diverse audiences.
Work with the Chief Community Officer to contribute to regional discussions on climate science and fisheries management.
Report research outcomes to the Board of Directors and Science Advisory Committee.

Qualifications:
ECO Magazine seeks candidates with vision, expertise, and proven leadership capabilities to guide the Research Team and contribute to the organization during a time of significant challenges and opportunities.

Required Qualifications Include:
Ph.D. in relevant natural or social sciences, with a minimum of 10 years of postgraduate research experience;

A distinguished record of research leadership, including experience in building successful research programs, leading multidisciplinary teams, mentoring staff, securing grants, and achieving significant scientific outcomes.
