Position Overview
The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is in search of a Chief Legal Officer dedicated to advancing the SPLC's mission of promoting racial justice.
The Chief Legal Officer will offer legal advice and direction to the SPLC leadership, ensuring the organization's legal rights are safeguarded and that all operations comply with applicable laws. This role involves providing strategic counsel and support to the President/CEO, the Executive Team, and the Board of Directors on a wide array of legal matters pertinent to fulfilling the Center's mission.

Candidate Profile
Experienced Leader. Proven experience in advising executive leadership and board members on legal matters, with a history of translating strategic insights and legal analysis into actionable plans and results.
Team Builder. Skilled in managing, training, and developing teams, with a focus on clear communication of objectives, policies, and processes, always prioritizing the SPLC's interests.
Informed Advocate. Strong understanding of the U.S. political landscape, cultural dynamics, social movements, and race relations, particularly in the context of the Deep South.
Legal Authority. Extensive knowledge across various legal fields, including employment law, non-profit regulations, privacy and security, and compliance issues. Exceptional legal research and writing capabilities.
Communicative Professional. Proficient in both written and verbal communication.
Ethical Practitioner. Demonstrates high ethical standards, emotional intelligence, and a strong moral compass, with the ability to navigate challenging decisions with integrity and a sense of humor.
Results-Oriented. Capable of thriving in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while meeting deadlines.
Collaborative Partner. Proven ability to work effectively and efficiently with others.
Alignment with Mission. Deep understanding of and commitment to the SPLC's mission and values, particularly regarding justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Key Responsibilities
Provide Legal Guidance. Advise on corporate governance for both 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) Boards.
Board Secretary. Serve as Secretary for the c3 Board, ensuring accurate documentation of governance decisions.
Strategic Counsel. Collaborate with the President/CEO to advise the executive team on legal matters related to strategic objectives, while identifying and managing compliance and risk management initiatives.
Human Resources Support. Counsel HR on investigations, employee disciplinary matters, and the interpretation and drafting of HR policies.
General Legal Advice. Provide legal counsel across various domains, including procurement, labor, employment, and intellectual property.
Contract Oversight. Review and approve contracts and agreements with external entities.
Litigation Management. Oversee any litigation or disputes involving the organization.
Legal Services Management. Select and manage external legal services, including pro bono assistance.
Compliance Assurance. Ensure adherence to all relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Ethical Standards. Maintain the highest professional and ethical standards in all actions.
Public Representation. Act as a spokesperson for the organization at external meetings.
Diversity Advocacy. Actively promote the SPLC's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Team Management. Lead a team, providing mentorship and coaching to support their development.
Performance Oversight. Conduct performance reviews and manage staff development.
Additional Duties. Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
