Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated individual for the role of Academic Advisor or Senior Academic Advisor within the Office of Student Services. This position will primarily focus on providing guidance to undergraduate students in the fields of Physics and Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.

The selected candidate will foster a supportive environment for academic advising, ensuring that students receive high-quality educational experiences that promote inquiry, discovery, and innovation. This role is essential in enhancing student engagement and contributing to improved graduation and retention rates.

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this role is to maintain an effective academic advising framework for undergraduate students. The advisor will:

  1. Provide accurate and current information regarding academic program requirements.
  2. Interpret university and college policies and regulations effectively.
  3. Address inquiries from students and parents regarding graduation requirements.
  4. Guide students in identifying and fulfilling their academic goals, including suggesting alternatives for any unmet graduation criteria.
  5. Adhere to confidentiality protocols, particularly concerning Title IX and FERPA regulations.

Advising Services

The advisor will deliver comprehensive academic advising services, which include:

  • Assisting students in developing personalized academic plans.
  • Writing letters of recommendation and support for student appeals.
  • Encouraging students to explore opportunities that enhance their academic journey.
  • Teaching students how to navigate their college experience and make informed decisions.
  • Identifying at-risk students and providing necessary referrals to university resources.
  • Participating in training and professional development initiatives.

Collaboration and Record Keeping

The advisor will collaborate with university partners to support student recruitment and retention efforts. Responsibilities include:

  • Engaging in recruitment events and new student orientations.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records of student interactions and advising sessions.
  • Utilizing advising platforms to monitor student progress and establish advising checkpoints.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • At least two years of full-time advising experience in a higher education setting.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to foster a supportive environment for students.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience advising STEM or exploratory students.
  • Background in a STEM discipline.
