Position Overview

The Senior Academic Advisor will deliver specialized academic guidance to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program. This role involves collaboration with university colleagues and public stakeholders, including students and their families. By leveraging strong interpersonal and communication skills alongside comprehensive knowledge of academic curricula, policies, and student development, the advisor will assist students in identifying and achieving their academic and personal goals. Additionally, the advisor will play a key role in developing programs that enhance student engagement, success, and retention.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert advice on departmental, college, and university policies, academic programs, and the formulation of suitable academic plans.
  • Maintain precise and confidential student records utilizing the Navigate advising platform, ensuring targeted support through regular advising sessions.
  • Document all advising interactions thoroughly in Navigate.
  • Utilize DegreeWorks to assess student progress towards degree completion.
  • Compose letters of recommendation and support for student appeals.
  • Assist students in recognizing their interests, capabilities, and academic aspirations, guiding them in their educational journeys.
  • Introduce students to enriching opportunities that promote academic and personal growth.
  • Educate students on managing their college experience, navigating university resources, and taking responsibility for their academic achievements.
  • Identify and support students facing challenges or at risk of underperforming.
  • Make appropriate referrals to university resources as needed.
  • Review and endorse graduation applications, helping students overcome obstacles to graduation.
  • Coordinate and manage academic appeals submitted by students for review by the Academic Regulations Appeals Committee.
  • Collaborate with departmental and university partners to enhance student recruitment, retention, and graduation rates.
  • Work with school and university partners to design, implement, and assess initiatives that bolster student success.
  • Complete academic advising administrative tasks efficiently and on schedule.
  • Contribute to initiatives that promote student success across various academic programs.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of School of Pharmacy events as required.
Required Qualifications

  • A minimum of three years of professional advising experience in a higher education setting.
  • Proficient in effective advising techniques and their application.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend curriculum requirements across various departments.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address complex academic issues.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Exceptional written, interpersonal, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Navigate, Degree Works, Banner, eServices, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite to implement inclusive advising strategies.
  • A Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in creating, implementing, and evaluating educational programs or high-impact practices.
  • Two years of advising experience at Virginia Jobs.
  • Experience working with at-risk student populations.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on committees related to student engagement and success.
