Academic Support Specialist for Athletes

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking dedicated individuals to join our team as Academic Support Specialists for student-athletes. This role is essential in fostering academic achievement among student-athletes who may be facing challenges or require additional assistance in enhancing their academic skills and subject knowledge.

As an Academic Support Specialist, you will receive comprehensive training to effectively cater to the diverse needs of your students. Opportunities may also be available for summer engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Facilitate weekly sessions aimed at encouraging independent learning among student-athletes.
  2. Assess and address the study skill requirements of students during tutorial sessions.
  3. Maintain effective communication with students to support their learning journey.
  4. Document and submit accurate records of tutoring sessions by established deadlines.
  5. Exhibit a strong command of the academic subjects you are tutoring.
  6. Adhere to the policies governing the tutoring of student-athletes, including NCAA regulations.
  7. Comply with relevant university guidelines, including FERPA, Honor Code, and Title IX.
  8. Collaborate with staff to ensure the academic success of student-athletes.
  9. Participate in required training sessions and meetings, completing a minimum of ten hours of training each semester.
  10. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the Tutor Coordinator.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of at least 40 college credits.
  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 in undergraduate or graduate studies.
  • Availability to work a minimum of 12 hours per week throughout the academic term, with flexibility in scheduling.
  • Ability to engage with student-athletes from various educational and cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong communication skills paired with a patient and supportive demeanor.
