Position Overview
The Senior Academic Advisor for Pharmaceutical Sciences will deliver specialized academic guidance to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences program. This role involves collaboration with university colleagues and public stakeholders, including students and their families. By leveraging strong interpersonal and communication skills alongside comprehensive knowledge of academic curricula, policies, and student development, the advisor will assist students in establishing and achieving their academic and personal objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice on departmental, college, and university policies, as well as academic planning.
- Maintain precise and confidential student records utilizing the Navigate advising platform, ensuring each student receives a minimum of two individual advising sessions per semester.
- Document all advising interactions within the Navigate system.
- Utilize DegreeWorks to assess student progress towards degree completion.
- Compose letters of recommendation and support for student appeals.
- Guide students in identifying their academic interests and career aspirations.
- Introduce students to enriching opportunities that enhance their academic journey and personal growth.
- Educate students on effectively managing their college experience and making informed academic decisions.
- Identify and support students facing academic challenges.
- Facilitate referrals to relevant university resources.
- Review and approve graduation applications, assisting students in overcoming obstacles to graduation.
- Coordinate academic appeals for submission to the Academic Regulations Appeals Committee.
- Collaborate with university partners to enhance student recruitment, retention, and graduation rates.
- Engage with school and university partners to develop and assess programs that promote student success.
- Complete academic advising administrative tasks promptly.
- Contribute to initiatives that bolster student success across various academic programs.
- Participate in the planning and execution of relevant school events.
This position necessitates a candidate with a diverse set of technical and interpersonal skills, including:
- A minimum of three years of professional advising experience in a higher education environment.
- Proficiency in effective advising techniques and their application.
- Ability to comprehend and navigate curriculum requirements across various departments.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address complex academic issues.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize responsibilities.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities.
- Experience with Navigate, Degree Works, Banner, eServices, Google Suite, and Microsoft Office Suite to implement effective advising strategies.
- A Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment.
- Experience in creating, implementing, and evaluating educational programs or high-impact practices.
- Two years of advising experience at Virginia Jobs.
- Experience working with at-risk student populations.
- Demonstrated collaborative work experience, including participation in committees focused on student engagement and success.
