Position Overview:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated TRIO Project Advisor within the TRIO Student Support Services department. This role is pivotal in delivering targeted support services that encompass academic advising, career exploration, personal development, cultural enrichment, and financial literacy education for first-generation, low-income, and disabled students participating in TRIO programs.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Advising (40%): Deliver exceptional advising services as outlined in the program objectives, employing proactive advising techniques to bolster student success and enhance retention and graduation rates.
  • Maintain consistent communication with students regarding their academic and personal aspirations.
  • Utilize the university's student success management system effectively.
  • Collaborate with academic advisors to improve available services for students.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for eligible participants.
Programming (30%): Develop and implement relevant programming that aligns with grant objectives for eligible students.
  • Assist in the identification, recruitment, and selection of program participants.
  • Organize and facilitate workshops/events that support grant goals, including academic enrichment, professional development, financial literacy, and personal well-being.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to enhance program offerings.
  • Ensure students receive up-to-date content relevant to program initiatives.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments of program effectiveness and student engagement.
Teaching (20%): Successfully instruct a semester-long first-year studies course tailored for first-year TRIO participants during the designated academic term.
  • Fulfill course requirements in accordance with university standards.
  • Engage in professional development related to first-year studies and curriculum.
  • Utilize instructional resources and university-provided management systems to support curriculum objectives.
Professional Development (10%): Participate in ongoing professional development to enhance skills and stay informed about best practices in higher education and TRIO initiatives.
  • Engage with state, regional, and national TRIO associations.
  • Stay updated on research and best practices for supporting first-generation and low-income students.
  • Volunteer for university-wide committees representing the interests of the undergraduate population.
  • Complete additional tasks as assigned by the program director.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Progress toward a Master's degree (at least 18 graduate credits completed) in student services, higher education leadership, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience working with underrepresented student populations.
  • Proficient in computer applications (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, data entry technologies).
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, customer service, and time management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Capability to promote leadership, study skills, and team-building exercises.
  • Availability for evening and weekend work.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completed Master's degree in student services, higher education leadership, counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience in case management and advising on course selection and financial aid processes.
  • Familiarity with student information systems.
  • Professional experience supporting underserved student populations.
Additional Information:

This position is funded through a US Department of Education grant, and continued employment is contingent upon ongoing funding. The TRIO Project Advisor will primarily engage with students in person, with virtual options available as needed.
