Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Senior Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the University of California. As a key member of our animal care team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care and husbandry to our laboratory animals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Animal Care and Husbandry: Perform daily follow-up checks to ensure compliance with departmental guidelines and maintain a healthful environment by cleaning and sanitizing animal enclosures and equipment.
  • Animal Health and Behavior Monitoring: Monitor animal health and behavior, reporting any deviations from normal to the area supervisor.
  • Task Assistance: Assist with routine animal husbandry tasks, including feeding, cleaning, and sanitizing animal enclosures.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Communicate effectively with supervisors and co-workers to obtain information and instructions.
  • Treatment Administration: Treat animals humanely and safely, including administering PO, SQ, and IM treatments.
  • Contamination Control: Apply contamination control practices to prevent the spread of pathogens in bio-containment animal facilities.
  • Rotating Shifts and Overtime: Participate in weekend and holiday work rotations, and occasional overtime duties.
Requirements
  • Working Knowledge: Working knowledge of animal husbandry procedures sufficient to care for laboratory animals in an experimental environment.
  • Knowledge of Animal Habits: Knowledge of habits and appearances of laboratory animals sufficient to notice deviations from normal.
  • Handling and Safety: Skill in handling a variety of animals in a variety of situations to prevent injury or distress to the animal or self.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to read English and numbers to follow instructions, maintain records, and identify specific animals.
  • Language Skills: Skill in using basic English words and phrases to complete identification cards and inventory forms.
  • Verbal Communication: Ability to speak on a one-to-one basis using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain information and instructions.
Compensation

$32.94 Hourly
