ROLE SUMMARY: An Animal Care Specialist supports a Veterinarian by executing routine and specialized tasks in the medical or surgical care of animals within municipal animal shelters or spay and neuter facilities. Responsibilities include performing euthanasia by injection and administering vaccinations under the supervision of a licensed Veterinarian, providing emergency medical assistance to injured animals, and undertaking related duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) certificate, issued by the State of California Veterinary Medical Board, is mandatory at the time of application.

This examination will consist solely of an application review conducted by Personnel Department staff to confirm that applicants meet the minimum qualifications for the position.

  • This examination is based on a validation study.
  • Some roles within the Department of Animal Services may necessitate Veterinary Technicians to provide their own insured vehicle for City service, with mileage reimbursed according to established rates.

  • A final average score of 70% is required to be placed on the eligible list.
  • In accordance with Civil Service Rules, applicants with a regular appointment to a City position or on a reserve list will be considered Promotional candidates, while all other applicants will be considered Open candidates.
  • Some positions may require a valid California driver's license prior to appointment. Applicants may be disqualified if they have been convicted of a major moving violation within the past 36 months.
  • Applicants may file for this examination once every 180 days during the examination administration period. Names may be removed from the eligible list after six months.
