The Lead Supervisor plays a crucial role in guiding personnel, maintaining vivarium standards, and enhancing communication between Comparative Medicine and other departments.
Key Responsibilities:- Supervise and manage the husbandry team, including recruitment, training, and performance evaluations.
- Develop and implement training programs for animal care staff, focusing on animal welfare, safety protocols, and record-keeping practices.
- Establish performance metrics to evaluate technician productivity and identify areas for improvement. Prepare reports and present findings to senior management.
- Lead projects aimed at enhancing the husbandry program, including task delegation and progress monitoring.
- Maintain accurate records necessary for compliance with regulatory bodies and assist in the preparation of annual reports.
Provide regular updates to senior management regarding operational progress and challenges.
- Contribute to the creation and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to husbandry tasks, ensuring they are up-to-date and accurate.
- Collaborate with various departments to develop SOPs that require cross-functional input.
- Build and maintain relationships with facility management and external vendors to ensure effective maintenance and repair of equipment.
- Make recommendations for improvements in infrastructure and operational systems.
- Assess and ensure the safety of equipment used in animal care, coordinating maintenance as necessary.
- Oversee the implementation of software solutions in the vivarium and provide necessary training to staff.
- Manage the allocation of animal holding and procedural spaces in consultation with veterinary staff.
- Conduct training sessions for researchers and their teams on vivarium protocols.
- Supervise animal census procedures and ensure compliance with organizational policies.
- Act as a liaison with other organizational units to maintain regulatory compliance and efficient operations.
- Serve as a backup for other supervisory roles within the department.
- Stay informed about regulations governing laboratory animal care and ensure adherence in daily operations.
- Understand and apply safety protocols related to biohazardous agents in the vivarium.
Directly oversee the daily activities of the animal care team, ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently and on schedule. Responsible for staff management, including hiring, scheduling, and performance assessments.
Lead and coordinate team efforts to achieve departmental goals within budgetary constraints.
Facilitate teamwork by assigning tasks and ensuring quality standards are met.
Qualifications:
Education:
High School Diploma/GED – Required
Bachelor's Degree in a related field – Preferred
Experience:
8 years in Laboratory Animal Science
2 years in a leadership role within an AAALAC accredited facility
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and related software
Communication Skills:
Ability to convey expectations clearly and manage priorities effectively
Strong time management skills
Licenses & Certifications:
Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification required upon hire.
