Healthcare Assistant Educator

St Louis, Missouri, United States Washington University in St. Louis Full time
Scheduled Hours: 40 hours per week. This role is designed for student interns.

As a Healthcare Assistant Educator, you will undertake specific administrative and clinical responsibilities under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. Administrative tasks may involve scheduling appointments, managing medical records, processing patient billing, and coding medical information for insurance purposes. Clinical responsibilities may include recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examinations, drawing blood, and providing medical assistance as directed by physicians or nursing staff.

Job Overview:

Are you looking to leverage your 2+ years of healthcare experience along with your strong clinical and educational background to become a Certified Medical Assistant? This opportunity at Washington University in St. Louis could be a significant step in your career journey. If you have graduated from a Medical Assistant program but have not yet obtained professional certification, or if your certification has lapsed, this program may be ideal for you.

Program Highlights:

  • This is a sourcing requisition initiated by Human Resources to attract experienced non-credentialed Medical Assistants or Patient Care Technicians who aspire to become certified/Registered Medical Assistants. The one-year apprenticeship will provide the necessary education, mentorship, and on-the-job training to qualify for the NHA Medical Assistant exam, paving the way for a professional career.
  • Apprentices will be compensated for 40 hours of work per week, with 36 hours dedicated to departmental duties and 4 hours allocated for Medical Assistant training during the first 10 weeks of employment. Following this period, apprentices will sit for the NHA Certified Medical Assistant exam, and upon passing, will transition to a Registered/Certified Medical Assistant role for the remainder of the one-year commitment. Successful completion of the apprenticeship will earn the apprentice journeyman status through the US Department of Labor.
  • While completing the program does not terminate your employment with the Washington University clinical department, it allows for potential transfers to other departments within the university upon achieving Journeyman Status. Completion of the one-year apprenticeship is necessary to be recognized nationally as a graduate of an MA Program and to receive permanent NHA certification.
Applicant Instructions:

Please ensure you meet the following qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • At least two years of experience in a hospital or clinic environment.
  • Proficient typing and computer skills (testing will require a minimum of 30 wpm).
  • A passing score of 50% or greater on the Medical Assistant Exam.
  • Moderate Clinical Skills Assessment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and follow instructions.

Important Notes:

To qualify, candidates must possess a minimum of 2 years of recent patient care experience, ideally in a physician's office, clinic, or hospital setting. This program is particularly appealing to Medical Assistants who have completed a technical program but have not yet taken the certification exam. We also welcome those who seek a refresher course before attempting the national NHA exam. Employment is a prerequisite for participation in Washington University's Registered Medical Assistant Apprenticeship.

Compensation:

The salary for this position is $20.56 per hour. Individual rates will be determined based on qualifications, performance, and departmental budget considerations.

Benefits:

Washington University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Up to 22 days of vacation, 10 recognized holidays, and sick leave.
  • Competitive health insurance options with priority appointments and reduced copays/coinsurance.
  • Access to a defined contribution (403(b)) Retirement Savings Plan with contributions starting at 7%.

For further details on policies, benefits, and eligibility, please refer to the university's official resources.

Diversity Commitment:

Washington University in St. Louis is dedicated to fostering a diverse community and encourages applications from individuals of varied backgrounds and experiences.
