Job Title: Vice President, Lands and Habitat Conservation

Defenders of Wildlife is seeking a highly experienced and skilled Vice President to lead our land and habitat conservation efforts. As a key member of our senior leadership team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to conserve lands and habitats important to protecting and maintaining biodiversity nationally.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead Defenders' work to conserve lands and habitats important to protecting and maintaining biodiversity nationally.
  • Develop and implement effective on-the-ground implementation of federal and private land and habitat conservation programs.
  • Work closely with federal agencies, Congress, state agencies, tribes, and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate consideration of the effects of climate change on biodiversity in management of lands and habitat nationwide.
  • Develop and promote incentives to conserve biodiversity on federal, state, tribal, and private lands and waters.
  • Represent Defenders in public meetings, hearings, press events, conferences, coalitions, and in general communications with public officials, legislators, the news media, Defenders' membership, the donor community, and the public.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 15 years of experience, with 7 years of supervisory experience and 5 years of managing 2+ layers.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Defenders' legal, scientific, and/or political issues.
  • Strong research and data analysis skills, including ability to gather and synthesize information from multiple sources to produce high-quality work products in a consistent, efficient, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and tight deadlines while balancing competing assignments.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adaptable to shifting priorities while remaining responsive to urgent requests.
