EAD Management Services Inc. is in search of a knowledgeable Controls Engineer who will serve as the internal authority on controls for projects ranging from straightforward to intricate for our primary clients in the food, pharmaceutical, and logistics industries. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to comprehend and convey electrical and control philosophies, primarily focusing on various PLCs and subsystems. This role requires both independent work and collaboration within a team environment. Responsibilities include aiding in the design and development of systems/subsystems to meet contractual obligations and engaging with Electrical, Mechanical, Project Management, and Field teams on the design, procurement, and installation of the systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to scope definition and design, focusing on PLC/DCS-based control systems and instrumentation tailored to client specifications.
  • Execute all necessary programming for the control systems.
  • Collaborate with clients, vendors, construction administrators, and project teams.
  • Conduct and document technical design reviews with other disciplines to ensure the highest quality standards.
  • Manage and execute projects effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to meet cost and schedule constraints.
  • Adhere to all safety standards and practices set by EAD.
  • Engage in additional related duties as assigned.
  • Acquire knowledge of customer-specific electrical & controls specifications and industry standards, becoming the go-to resource for parcel electrical and controls expertise.
  • Review complex project specifications and mechanical layouts to outline specific control functions for the control system architecture.
  • Evaluate all electrical documentation and provide recommendations for design and procurement.
  • Oversee the selection and procurement of electrical components, creating project electrical BOMs and purchase requisitions.
  • Interface with panel fabricators for the design and implementation of control cabinets and consoles.
  • Draft scopes of work for electrical contractors.
  • Prepare electrical sections for project maintenance manuals, including final BOMs and recommended spare parts lists.
  • Ensure adherence to project budgets regarding material costs and engineering hours.
  • Prepare and present cost analyses to determine optimal courses of action.
  • Stay updated on new technologies and assess new electrical components for enhanced functionality and cost efficiency.
  • Maintain and revise current procedures and tools to support engineering efforts.
  • Review control panels utilizing standard devices to manage AC/DC conveyor systems and field devices.
  • Complete electrical material requisitions and collaborate with purchasing to acquire all electrical devices as per project requirements.
  • Provide engineering support for field startup personnel.
  • Oversee and/or generate cost estimates for proposed opportunities.
  • Create all necessary electrical and controls documentation for the sales process and proposals.
  • Participate in technical support for pre and post-sales customer consultations and presentations.
  • Outline specific control functions for designing the control system architecture.
  • Develop Request for Proposal packages for submission to potential equipment and service suppliers and assist in reviewing their responses.
  • Assess received proposals for accuracy in material costs and engineering hours.

Qualifications:

  • Exhibit a high degree of self-motivation and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and organizational skills to make effective decisions promptly while maintaining high-quality standards.
  • Familiarity with HMI or SCADA programming and configuration of software packages such as Wonderware, Rockwell, or Siemens.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Thorough understanding of A.C. and D.C. electrical theory.
  • Experience with electrical control systems, motor controls, VFDs, and the Rockwell Allen Bradley product line, including Control Logix and Compact Logix.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, including knowledge of script files, Autolisp programming, and Visual Basic (VBA) macros; 3D experience is a plus.
  • Ability to mentor junior Electrical/Control Engineers.
  • Proficient in NEC (National Electric Code), NFPA, and UL508A.
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage a challenging workload amidst unexpected changes in priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Ability to collaborate at all organizational levels.
  • Self-starter with the capacity to manage multiple priorities/tasks and possess strong organizational skills.
  • Effective communication, writing, and computer skills are essential.
  • Understanding of operational flow and requirements.
  • Ability to design systems, including software design, based on operational understanding.
  • Capability to write high-level functional design descriptions encompassing all solution aspects, including operations, software, and equipment.
  • Ability to lead internal resources, vendors, and customers.
  • Skill in identifying roadblocks and either resolving them or escalating to upper management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other subject matter experts to deliver optimized solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field preferred; or four years of military service, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience with automation, electrical controls, PLC/DCS-based control systems (maintenance and troubleshooting), AC/DC drives, power distribution, and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, ISA, and U.L. codes is preferred.

Working Conditions:

  • Office, plant, or client site environment.
  • Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
  • Ability to navigate numerous flights of stairs/ladders multiple times a day and/or work in confined spaces under extreme conditions.
  • May work near moving mechanical parts and equipment.
  • Office, commercial, and/or industrial setting with potential exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.
  • Occasional weekend, holiday, or evening work may be required.
  • Travel may be necessary as needed.
