Position Overview

As a High School Science Educator at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with colleagues across the network to equip students with the essential tools and knowledge to engage critically in scientific disciplines and foster their development as independent learners. Our Science curriculum is centered around inquiry-based learning, emphasizing student discourse and scientific practices. You will utilize diverse instructional strategies to ignite a passion for scientific inquiry and analysis among your students. Our goal is to prepare all students to pursue and excel in any STEM field, empowering them to become informed citizen scientists capable of engaging in scientific discussions, regardless of their future academic or professional paths.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Duties

  • Deliver a comprehensive curriculum encompassing Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Environmental Sciences, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level studies.
  • Cultivate students' skills in questioning, modeling, constructing explanations, data analysis, argumentation, and conducting interactive laboratory experiments.
  • Foster an environment where students feel empowered to express their ideas and engage in scientific discussions.
  • Facilitate student-led discussions, encouraging the use of evidence to support claims and critique arguments.
  • Guide students in exploring various scientific topics through inquiry-based projects and laboratory tasks.
  • Collaborate with the Science department to set academic and engagement objectives for students.

2. Data-Driven Analysis

  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessment trends.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners in your classroom.

3. Cultivating School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and supported.
  • Collaborate with families to provide necessary resources that support student learning.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions focused on practice improvement.
  • Attend weekly school-wide meetings to foster community, uphold core values, and promote student achievement.
  • Work with your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • Experience working with K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years preferred).
    • Academic proficiency in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. While certification is not mandatory for hiring, candidates must meet state certification eligibility and enroll in a teacher preparation program, maintaining a GPA of 2.75 or higher if they do not hold a degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are expected to obtain certification in New York within a reasonable timeframe after starting their position.

Compensation for this position: The starting compensation for this role based in New York is between $50,000 to $64,700. The starting pay will depend on various factors including but not limited to relevant professional experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Because we value staff tenure in a role, we do not currently cap salary ranges for current staff members.
