Position Overview

As a High School Math Teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with grade and content teams to guide students towards becoming independent learners. You will develop expertise in your subject matter and possess the ability to inspire and motivate high school students. Your passion for mathematics will be central to your teaching approach, employing various instructional strategies to help students understand, persevere, and solve mathematical problems. By the end of their high school journey, students will be equipped for academic independence and college-level coursework.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Duties

  • Deliver a Math curriculum that includes topics such as Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level studies.
  • Support students in problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Utilize your enthusiasm for mathematics to build student confidence and engagement.
  • Encourage students to construct and justify logical arguments using mathematical reasoning and terminology.
  • Create a nurturing environment where students feel safe, confident, and motivated to learn.
  • Collaborate with the Math department to set academic and engagement objectives for students.

2. Data-Driven Analysis

  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to review and respond to trends in student performance.
  • Implement strategies to tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners.

3. Fostering School Culture

  • Build strong relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and heard.
  • Work with families to provide necessary resources to support their children's educational needs.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching opportunities.
  • Engage in school-wide meetings to promote community, embody core values, and support student success.
  • Collaborate with your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional techniques.

  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic expertise in Mathematics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. While certification is not mandatory for hiring, candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility and enroll in a teacher preparation program if they do not hold a degree in education.

Compensation: The starting salary for this position in Rochester ranges from $50,000 to $64,700, based on factors such as relevant experience, education, certifications, and tenure.
