Position Overview

As a High School Mathematics Teacher at Uncommon Schools, you will collaborate with grade and content teams to guide students toward becoming independent learners. You will develop expertise in your subject matter and possess the ability to inspire and motivate high school students. A genuine passion for mathematics will be central to your teaching approach, employing various instructional strategies to help students understand, engage with, and solve mathematical problems. By the end of their high school journey, students will be equipped for academic independence and college-level coursework.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instructional Duties

  • Utilize a comprehensive Math curriculum to teach subjects such as Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus, preparing students for Advanced Placement (AP) and college-level courses.
  • Support students in problem-solving and critical thinking.
  • Foster confidence and meaningful engagement with mathematics through your enthusiasm for the subject.
  • Encourage students to construct and justify logical arguments using mathematical reasoning and vocabulary.
  • Create a supportive community of self-directed learners where students feel safe and engaged.
  • Collaborate with the Math department to set academic and engagement objectives for students.

2. Data-Driven Analysis

  • Engage in weekly meetings with your principal and/or instructional coach to review and respond to trends in student assessments and work samples.
  • Implement strategies to differentiate instruction for diverse learners in your classroom.

3. Fostering School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel valued and understood.
  • Work with families to provide necessary resources that support their child's educational needs.
  • Participate in professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Engage in weekly school-wide meetings to strengthen community ties, model core values, and promote student success.
  • Collaborate with your grade-level team to establish academic goals and refine instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • A demonstrated interest in impacting K-12 students in urban settings (1-2 years of experience preferred).
    • Academic expertise in Mathematics, Science, Technology, Engineering, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required prior to employment. Certification is not mandatory for hiring, but candidates must meet New York state certification eligibility requirements, which include enrolling in a teacher preparation program and maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher during employment if lacking a degree in education. Uncommon Schools teachers are expected to obtain certification in New York within a reasonable timeframe after starting employment.

Compensation Details: The starting salary for this position in Rochester ranges from $50,000 to $64,700, influenced by factors such as relevant experience, education, certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. We value staff longevity and do not impose salary caps for current employees.
