Position Overview

About the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment

For three decades, the Rose Foundation has championed grassroots initiatives that motivate community involvement to safeguard the environment, public health, and individual rights. Our community-focused grantmaking strategy has garnered national acclaim for empowering grassroots movements for conservation and social equity. Our New Voices Are Rising (NVR) program emphasizes youth leadership and environmental stewardship, particularly in BIPOC communities disproportionately affected by social and environmental challenges.

Internship Summary

The Environmental Justice Youth Engagement Intern is a temporary role designed to support NVR's Youth Power for Air Justice initiative, aimed at fostering youth involvement in creating a fair and sustainable air quality future. This position will enhance the capacity of young individuals to tackle air quality challenges in underserved communities. The intern will be responsible for developing and executing air quality data tracking systems and sharing findings with the communities served. This role requires significant in-person interaction with students and community members.

Ideal Candidates

We seek individuals who are passionate about youth development, community engagement, and environmental justice education, particularly regarding air quality issues. Candidates should be comfortable working with diverse youth populations and committed to fostering young leaders. Proficiency in data management and experience in environmental or social justice advocacy are essential. Familiarity with the New Voices Are Rising program is advantageous.

We value a diverse team whose experiences shape their approach to social justice and community equity. We encourage applications from individuals with strong ties to underserved communities, particularly BIPOC individuals, as well as those who identify as women, femme, non-binary, or LGBTQ+. Bilingual candidates, especially those fluent in Spanish or other languages prevalent in California's communities of color, are highly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities

The Environmental Justice Youth Engagement Intern's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Establishing and maintaining an air quality monitoring network in the East Bay, including the installation of multiple monitors for indoor and outdoor particulate matter levels.
  • Ensuring the upkeep of the air monitoring network through regular maintenance and repairs.
  • Collaborating with air quality Fellows to conduct monitoring, data collection, analysis, and creating accessible data visualization resources for youth and community members.
  • Partnering with community organizations to facilitate training and engagement efforts.
  • Engaging with up to 100 youth and community members through workshops, planning sessions, surveys, and focus groups.
  • Leading a youth Data Camp in collaboration with Fellows.
  • Supporting the annual Fellowship Summit by designing and facilitating workshops.
  • Participating in meetings and advocacy events involving student engagement.
  • Contributing to NVR's social media and communications by creating and sharing informative content about air quality.

Fellowship Support

  • Assisting in the recruitment of air quality Fellows.
  • Supporting Fellows in drafting a community-focused Regional Air Monitoring Plan that highlights local concerns and solutions.
  • Facilitating youth-led projects centered on air quality and monitoring initiatives.

Administrative Duties

  • Providing necessary documentation for grant reporting.
  • Contributing to team-building activities and connecting students with organizational initiatives.
  • Performing additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with data sets and spreadsheets, with a desire to enhance data management skills.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working directly with youth in community organizing, leadership development, education, or advocacy.
  • Experience engaging with queer youth and youth of color.
  • A demonstrated commitment to environmental justice.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort in facilitating group discussions.
  • Ability to manage logistics and maintain attention to detail.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Compliance with the Rose Foundation's health and safety policies.
  • A background clearance is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NVR's Fellowship program.
  • Knowledge of local educational institutions and organizations serving low-income, BIPOC youth.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish or another relevant language.
  • A valid driver's license for transporting materials to events.
  • Pursuing a degree in a related field.
