Covenant House California (CHC) is a non-profit organization committed to providing safety, hope, and opportunities for youth to rebuild their lives.


We seek candidates with experience working with young people who have encountered homelessness, possess traumatic backgrounds, identify as LGBTQ, are under 30, and may be gender non-conforming or face multiple challenges and complex needs.

The ideal candidate will have knowledge and/or experience in youth development initiatives, applying a harm reduction approach, utilizing trauma-informed practices, and valuing collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team to foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.

This role will involve responsibilities across multiple locations.

POSITION SUMMARY:


The Youth Engagement Specialist will operate within the Housing Resources Center / Wellness Center and will work under the guidance of the Support Services Director.

The role entails assisting and supporting youth in completing assessments, providing resources that cater to their needs, connecting them to services and support, and facilitating workshops.

Responsibilities include engaging with youth experiencing homelessness in various community settings, including drop-in centers and educational institutions.

The position requires collaboration with CHC teams, staff, and other community service providers.

Successful candidates will demonstrate a passion for positive youth engagement, creative problem-solving abilities, and comprehensive case management skills, including relationship building, linkages, crisis prevention, and intervention.

Documentation, tracking, and matching youth with housing resources are also key responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Exemplify positive youth engagement and support throughout the Wellness Center, ensuring a safe, youth-centered environment, facilitating referrals and linkages, and leading workshops and activities as necessary.
  • Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with local and state resource staff as required by HUD Coordinated Entry System teams.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of community housing resources, mental health issues, and available state and county resources for youth experiencing homelessness.
  • Collaborate with your supervisor and team to create safe, inclusive, and affirming spaces for all youth. Engage youth in advisory boards or action boards as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices in engagement, outreach, and intervention strategies targeting runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth.
  • Develop and implement effective interventions based on trauma-informed, harm reduction, and positive youth development frameworks.
  • Ensure all written correspondence, demographic data, and reports are completed accurately and submitted in a timely manner.
  • Represent Covenant House California at community meetings or forums addressing homelessness or mental health issues.
  • Travel between various locations and collaborate with team members to ensure youth are aware of available resources.
  • Participate in all required training sessions and stay updated on relevant guidelines and reporting protocols.
  • Occasionally collaborate with outreach workers to assist unsheltered youth in the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:
High School diploma or GED preferred but not mandatory.

EXPERIENCE:

A minimum of 1-2 years of experience in youth work is required, along with experience in community-based programs for youth facing homelessness and vulnerable populations.

Must be a self-motivated team player capable of collaborating with staff, clients, vendors, and the public.


SKILLS:
Must demonstrate appropriate independent judgment when necessary. Ability to make independent decisions regarding client placement is essential. Knowledge in crisis intervention, mental health, and community service delivery is required. Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills are necessary.

TRANSPORTATION:
Reliable transportation is required. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is preferred.

CONDITIONS:

Full-time position; must be able to stand for extended periods, bend, and lift up to 30-40 pounds as needed.
