Position Overview

UPMC Presbyterian is seeking a Genomic Laboratory Specialist I to contribute to the Molecular and Genomic Pathology Laboratory (MGP). This role is a daytime position, operating Monday through Friday, with no weekend or holiday shifts required.

The Molecular and Genomic Pathology Laboratory (MGP) is a cutting-edge clinical facility dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care in the areas of hereditary conditions, blood cancers, and solid tumors through advanced molecular testing technologies and informatics strategies, including next-generation sequencing. MGP provides its team members with a fulfilling career path, offering diverse responsibilities and opportunities to enhance individual skills. The laboratory fosters a collaborative environment where each team member's unique expertise is recognized and valued.

We are pleased to offer a competitive sign-on bonus for this position.

  • Sign-On Bonus Details: $15,000 for a 3-year commitment

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accurately document relevant data and metrics in case files and internal systems.
  • Comply with established laboratory and hospital protocols, as well as good clinical laboratory practices in areas such as procedures, quality control, quality assurance, and safety compliance.
  • Utilize automated and/or liquid handling systems for clinical testing as required.
  • Precisely analyze molecular assay outcomes for final review by medical personnel.
  • Effectively communicate with laboratory colleagues, including leadership. Track technical and professional growth, including participation in seminars/webinars and educational programs.
  • Identify critical, abnormal, or unacceptable results and follow established protocols for follow-up.
  • Document all corrective measures and communicate with the lead or supervisor.
  • Independently conduct clinical testing according to established standard operating procedures (SOPs). Process all clinical, quality control, and proficiency testing specimens through the clinical workflow.
  • Exhibit advanced problem-solving skills and analytical capabilities to successfully perform laboratory testing.
  • Maintain knowledge of molecular biology techniques, including but not limited to: nucleic acid extraction, quantification, PCR/RT-PCR/qPCR, Sanger sequencing, loss of heterozygosity (LOH), methylation analysis, MassARRAY MALDI-TOF, and next-generation sequencing.
  • Ensure proficiency in relevant Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
  • Operate, perform routine maintenance on, and calibrate laboratory equipment as necessary.
  • Identify issues with instrumentation, methodologies, specimens, or supplies and follow established protocols for resolution.
  • Process samples meticulously to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Meet established turnaround time requirements for clinical testing.

Molecular procedures involve complex assays with multiple steps spanning several days. Quality control checkpoints are established at each stage, but the final evaluation of each assay requires every technologist to assess both the overall assay performance and individual sample results. Specifically, in molecular laboratories, technologists must:

  • Demonstrate accurate and precise pipetting skills.
  • Possess a solid understanding of molecular fundamentals and techniques to comprehend the assay methodology and execute it correctly, both manually and with advanced instrumentation.
  • Exhibit high-level problem-solving abilities for assays, instruments, controls, samples, and reagents/enzymes, enabling them to recognize, understand, and respond to performance trends at every stage of each assay.
  • Understand basic molecular workflow principles and necessary precautions to ensure the integrity of assays and specimens.

Qualifications for Molecular Genomic Specialist I:

  • Bachelor's degree in a biological science field; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical or physical science field with at least 1 year of experience in a clinical molecular laboratory AND 16 semester hours in chemistry (including at least 6 hours in inorganic chemistry), 16 semester hours in biology courses relevant to medical sciences, and 3 semester hours in mathematics.
  • 1 year of clinical molecular laboratory experience OR 1 year of experience through training in relevant molecular laboratory coursework.
  • Prior clinical laboratory experience, particularly with next-generation sequencing testing, is preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

  • (MB) ASCP certification is preferred.
  • Act 34 clearance.
