Program Overview:

The Bezos Earth Fund has initiated Greening America's Cities (GAC), a significant multi-year initiative aimed at investing in community-driven environmental justice organizations. This program focuses on enhancing green spaces in urban areas, fostering collaboration among local governments, and supporting community-led projects.

Position Overview:

The role of Government Relations Coordinator presents an exceptional opportunity for individuals passionate about sustainability and environmental equity. This position requires a proven track record in local government collaboration and community engagement, contributing strategically to the mission of the Greening America's Cities initiative. The Coordinator will work closely with the City of Chicago's Department of Environment and the Urban Sustainability Directors Network (USDN).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Management: Act as the primary contact for the City of Chicago's Department of Environment, supporting current grantees and fostering an environment conducive to community-based organizations.
  • Technical Assistance: Provide support to the Department of Environment and community organizations through collaboration with USDN staff and technical partners, ensuring alignment with the initiative's goals.
  • Engagement Activities: Organize regular meetings and training sessions for local government and community organizations, addressing needs identified in partnership with the Earth Fund Community Fellow.
  • Community Representation: Attend meetings and represent the Department of Environment as required, facilitating community engagement at various governmental levels.

Strategic Development:

  • Collaborate with the Earth Fund Community Fellow to create a shared vision for the success of the GAC initiative.
  • Establish systems for effective information sharing among grantees, identifying common interests for collaborative problem-solving.
  • Engage in peer learning opportunities to share insights and experiences within the network.

Communication and Relationship Management:

  • Work with the Department of Environment and the Earth Fund Community Fellow to document progress and communicate successes, potentially through various media formats.
  • Contribute to educational materials that enhance field knowledge and influence practices.

Equity and Inclusion Focus:

  • Maintain professional competency in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), integrating these principles into programming and job responsibilities.
  • Address EDI challenges faced by members and commit to social justice and anti-racist principles.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Three to five years of experience working with community stakeholders and diverse organizations.
  • Strong understanding of environmental and climate justice issues within urban settings.
  • Experience collaborating with local governments and knowledge of city processes.
  • Willingness to travel nationally as needed.
