The role of a Medication Administration Specialist is vital in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of medications to residents, emphasizing adherence to personalized care plans.
Key responsibilities encompass the administration of prescribed medications, confirming the accuracy of each dosage, and meticulously documenting the administration process. This position also involves collaboration with Resident Assistants (RAs), Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to facilitate daily care routines.
Furthermore, the Medication Administration Specialist is tasked with monitoring and recording vital signs and weights, observing residents for any reactions to medications, contributing to the development of care standards, and providing guidance to residents on personal and social matters.
Effective communication with healthcare providers, families, and LPNs regarding medication orders is essential, as is addressing residents' needs in a timely manner.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following responsibilities are typical for this position. This list is not exhaustive and additional tasks may be assigned.

  • Assist in the administration of medications to residents, ensuring proper ingestion or application.
  • Confirm the identity of the resident receiving medication, ensure the correct medication is administered, and accurately record the time of administration.
  • Support RAs, CNAs, and LPNs in assisting residents with daily activities, personal care, and housekeeping tasks.
  • Measure and document residents' vital signs (temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respiration, and oxygen saturation) and weight as required.
  • Monitor residents for medication responses and report any unexpected reactions to the appropriate personnel.
  • Contribute to the formulation and evaluation of care standards.
  • Provide counseling to residents in addressing social or personal challenges.
  • Notify families when it is necessary to reorder mail-order medications.
  • Communicate with healthcare providers regarding medication orders and inform the on-duty LPN of any necessary changes.
  • Ensure prompt response to call lights to meet residents' needs as quickly as possible.
  • Maintain accurate records of narcotics and adhere to documentation policies.
  • Assist with dietary tasks, including meal service and cleaning dining areas as needed.
  • Participate in required training and meetings to stay informed about organizational and nursing department updates.
  • Complete all state-mandated training and documentation annually.
  • Ensure all caregiver responsibilities are performed and documented appropriately.
  • Engage in the care planning process as assigned.
  • Address concerns from employees, families, and residents to foster satisfaction and effective communication.
  • Be knowledgeable about fire evacuation and disaster policies, participating in drills as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all personal and health information related to residents and staff.
  • Conduct oneself professionally in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors that contribute to the success of Remember Me Senior Care and the well-being of residents.

QUALIFICATIONS

Educational Background and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Prior experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant or as a nursing student is preferred.
  • Experience working with residents with Alzheimer's or Dementia is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing in English is essential.

Certifications, Licenses, and Special Requirements:

  • Completion of a Nursing Assistant certification program is required.
  • Successful completion of Medication Aide Training is mandatory.
  • Current certification in CPR and first aid is required.

Must be capable of lifting and transferring residents using proper body mechanics.
