Position Overview

The chemistry division at Poseida is on the lookout for a highly skilled and imaginative synthetic chemist to join our vibrant and fast-moving team. The primary goal of our group is to create novel ionizable lipids and conjugates that serve as specialized non-viral delivery mechanisms for genome editing and gene therapy initiatives. This position is laboratory-focused, where you will be responsible for designing, synthesizing, characterizing, and refining innovative cationic lipids, polymers, and lipid-like compounds. You will also collaborate closely with formulation, analytical, and pharmacology teams within Poseida. A strong foundation in small molecule synthesis is essential, and experience in lipid synthesis and purification is advantageous but not mandatory.

Key Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:
  • Developing novel ionizable lipids, cationic polymers, lipid-conjugates, and lipid-like compounds for nucleic acid delivery applications.
  • Conducting synthetic planning, purification, and characterization independently with minimal oversight.
  • Implementing scale-up and preliminary process development studies for lead compounds to facilitate preclinical research.
  • Collaborating with formulation and pharmacology teams to establish structure-activity relationships for innovative ionizable lipids and other nanoparticle excipients.
  • Analyzing and presenting experimental findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Working alongside the intellectual property team and R&D leaders to support existing patent strategies and expedite patent filings for new discoveries.
  • Adhering to EHS safety protocols and fostering a safe working environment.
  • Providing guidance to functional group leadership on chemical solutions for broader research initiatives, making informed recommendations, and building teams for effective execution.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field (e.g., organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, polymer science) with 0-2 years of applicable industry experience. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree with 10 years or a Master's degree with at least 8 years of relevant experience, including a minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience, may be considered.
  • Proficiency in modern organic synthesis and a solid understanding of non-viral gene delivery systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in the synthesis, purification, and characterization of small organic molecules, including heterocycles, carbohydrates, and lipids.
  • Practical experience with analytical techniques such as FT-IR, NMR, TLC, column chromatography, HPLC, and LCMS.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within a results-driven research team.
  • Self-motivated with exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
