Position Overview

The Young People's Project (YPP) is dedicated to transforming the participation landscape in STEM education across various communities. Our mission focuses on engaging students who have historically faced barriers in STEM fields, recognizing their potential as vital contributors and innovators in the learning process.

Role Summary

The Computer Science For All initiative aims to enhance math and computer science education through a collaborative mentorship model. This program emphasizes a near-peer approach to teaching, fostering a supportive learning environment.

As a College STEM Literacy Worker (CSLW), you will be a key player in this initiative, representing local college students majoring in STEM disciplines. Your contributions will be twofold:

  1. Collaborate with YPP and Bootstrap staff to develop your skills as an educator in integrated computer science through the Bootstrap Algebra curriculum.
  2. Partner with high school math teachers to provide in-depth knowledge of the Bootstrap: Algebra module and computational thinking strategies.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create a safe and engaging classroom atmosphere that promotes respect and collaboration.
  • Establish meaningful connections with students, teachers, and YPP personnel.
  • Support students in developing essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, and teamwork.
  • Take on leadership roles within the classroom by assisting in teaching and classroom management.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to facilitate and co-lead STEM-related discussions in a classroom setting.
  • Familiarity with coding and research methodologies.
  • Open-mindedness towards diverse problem-solving approaches.
  • Strong communication skills, demonstrated through effective presentations.
  • Commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges faced by students in educational settings.
  • Experience in urban educational environments.
  • Enthusiasm for innovative teaching methods and curriculum design.
Compensation and Work Schedule
  • Part-time position.
  • Hourly rate of $17.
