Handel and Haydn Society | Musicianship Teacher

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Lead Musicianship Teacher

Role Summary:

The Musicianship Teacher at the Handel and Haydn Society is a dedicated educator responsible for fostering a love for music among students through engaging weekly classes. The students, who are part of various Youth Chorus ensembles, will benefit from a curriculum designed to enhance their musical skills.

The curriculum emphasizes a sound-first methodology to develop music literacy, incorporating moveable-do solfège for pitch training and the Takadimi rhythm system for rhythm education. A strong focus is placed on building a sense of community and connection among students as they explore musicianship, complementing their ensemble experiences.

This role includes planning and delivering classes tailored for high school and middle school students, with sessions held in-person. Classes occur on Saturday mornings during the academic year, and administrative responsibilities are completed at the end of the season.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging instruction in sight-singing and aural skills to inspire students.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and collaborate with the Musicianship Lead Teacher on student rosters.
  • Participate in weekly faculty meetings to enhance curriculum and instructional strategies.
  • Conduct semi-annual evaluations of student progress and provide constructive feedback to students and their families.
  • Support the operational needs of seasonal concerts.
  • Engage with families to promote the program and clarify course expectations.
  • Attend faculty meetings and professional development sessions organized for staff.
  • Represent the Handel and Haydn Society at relevant events and meetings.
  • Mentor teaching assistants and foster leadership among students.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A strong passion for music education, particularly with youth.
  • At least two years of experience in an educational setting with youth, ideally at various school levels.
  • A degree in music or music education is preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced musicianship skills, with familiarity in the Takadimi rhythm system and music education methodologies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills to connect with students of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong communication abilities and attention to detail.
  • A proactive mindset, adaptability, and a positive demeanor.
  • Understanding of the diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds of students and their families.
  • Fluency in additional languages such as Spanish, Cape Verdean, Vietnamese, Haitian, or Mandarin is a plus.
  • A genuine commitment to advocating for music education and the mission of the Handel and Haydn Society.
  • Availability for Saturday morning classes is essential.
