Role Summary:


The Marine Engineer will serve as the primary technical authority responsible for the research, design, and innovation of products and equipment that complement the Hutchinson Marine Solutions portfolio.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive product design experience tailored for maritime vessels and a comprehensive understanding of shipboard systems and operational environments.

Successful candidates will collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams, engaging with fellow engineers and project managers to fulfill design, analysis, and testing objectives essential for product development success.

Additionally, candidates will liaise with Product Management and leadership to ensure design configurations align with corporate strategies and meet customer specifications and requirements.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough research, execute tests, and analyze outcomes to design and validate prototype and pre-production components and assemblies.
  • Develop technical documentation, reports, and summaries for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Create, review, and amend engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Oversee the engineering team to guarantee that deliverables are precise and comply with customer and internal standards.
  • Coordinate with both internal and external manufacturing partners to ensure accurate fabrication of designed components and validate manufacturing processes in pre-production settings.
  • Investigate, diagnose, and resolve issues related to prototype-level design iterations to ensure technical challenges are addressed and development milestones are met.
  • Interpret specification documents to confirm that designs fulfill all necessary requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or a related field.
  • Master's degree or Professional Engineer (PE) certification preferred.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering will be considered if they possess relevant marine experience.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting technical drawings and documentation.
  • Familiarity with shipboard and shipyard technical requirements, including work items and equipment specifications.
  • Over 10 years of experience in engineering within maritime environments.
  • Shipboard experience is highly desirable.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong technical aptitude in design, analysis, fabrication, testing, and development of marine systems.
  • Knowledge of vessel Hull Electrical and Mechanical (HM&E) Systems.
  • Prior experience with vessel propulsion systems is strongly preferred.
  • Proficient in 3D/2D design software, with expertise in at least one of the following: Solidworks, CREO, Pro/E, or Nastran.

  • Experience in creating and utilizing documents and spreadsheets to summarize work products, schedules, milestones, and technical challenges.
  • Excellent written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Hands-on mechanical skills, including experience with hand tools and mechanical repairs.
  • Understanding of fabrication practices such as welding, machining, and finishing.

Certifications:

  • Must be a US Citizen or US Green Card Holder.
  • OSHA 10 certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The employee frequently is required to sit, walk, talk, and hear.

The employee may occasionally need to climb, balance, stoop, lift, or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required for this role include close vision for viewing a computer terminal, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception for driving, and the ability to adjust focus.

This position is not significantly exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Personal Protective Equipment:
The following PPE is required while in the manufacturing area:

  • Safety glasses conforming to ANSI Z87.1 or higher.
  • Steel toe safety shoes conforming to OSHA General Industry Standards 29 CFR 1910.
  • Hearing protection conforming to OSHA General Industry Standards 29 CFR 1910.
