Position Title: Systems Infrastructure Engineer

Alsym Energy is in search of a proactive and enthusiastic engineer dedicated to constructing secure and scalable infrastructure. This role will take charge of the Linux systems and contribute to the design of operating system architecture. The selected candidate will be accountable for the design, construction, and support of infrastructure that hosts high-performance computing (HPC) applications while upholding and enhancing a robust information security framework.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Guarantee the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems.
  • Compile low-level software from source.
  • Possess a working knowledge of packet flows from the access layer to the network core.
  • Demonstrate experience with Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching protocols.
  • Employ automation and monitoring solutions to reduce daily maintenance and optimize system management practices or performance.
  • Design, install, configure, and maintain both desktop and server operating systems.
  • Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to small and medium-sized groups of scientists and engineers.
  • Ensure the secure and efficient operation of Linux computing systems by adhering to our infrastructure framework.
  • Quickly and effectively troubleshoot system issues.
  • Collaborate with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software challenges.
  • Install and configure both commercial and various open-source software packages.
  • Maintain documentation regarding software infrastructure, builds, and installations.
  • Occasional off-hours support may be required.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Assist with helpdesk tasks as necessary (new hire provisioning, asset management, mobile device management, operating system, and software troubleshooting).
  • Familiarity with operating within a change control environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field, along with 5 years of relevant experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable.
  • Experience managing GitLab.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux systems and/or enterprise network technologies.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience using configuration management and automation tools such as Git, Salt, Ansible, or Puppet.
  • Moderate proficiency in at least one scripting language, such as Bash or Python.
  • Experience in advanced troubleshooting and systems administration.
  • Experience supporting large data systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.
  • Experience with RHEL, Debian, VMware, Cisco, Aruba, and Juniper.
  • Understanding of HPC platforms to assist users with job submissions and troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing systems utilizing GPU/CUDA clusters for HPC.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis, and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
  • Experience with monitoring systems such as Grafana, CheckMK, Nagios, WhatsUp, or Zabbix.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Prometheus, PowerBI).
  • Some experience with (or a desire to learn) Windows and macOS environments.
  • Ability to collaborate with scientists and engineers to design and implement solutions.
  • Previous experience in a government, scientific, or other highly technical and security-conscious organization.
  • Strong documentation skills, including the ability to log work via a ticketing system.
