Job Overview

This position entails a professional role as a certified peer specialist who leverages their personal experiences in parenting a child with significant emotional or mental health challenges. The role involves engaging with various child-serving systems, including mental health, substance use, special education, juvenile justice, and child welfare. The primary focus of Peer Support services is to facilitate structured activities that foster socialization, recovery, self-advocacy, and the development of community living skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist families in acquiring skills that enhance their recovery journey, such as self-advocacy and building natural support networks.
  • Empower families to take the lead in treatment discussions and decisions.
  • Provide empathetic listening to families' concerns and offer constructive suggestions for their involvement in the planning process.
  • Deliver continuous emotional support and mentorship throughout the service planning phases.
  • Encourage and strategize for family and youth recovery, resilience, and overall wellness.
  • Collaborate with families to identify and leverage their strengths while addressing challenges and opportunities.
  • Help families navigate service options and understand the policies that affect their child.
  • Ensure active participation of families and youth in the planning process, guiding them toward proactive engagement in treatment.
  • Support families in developing skills to monitor their child's needs and strengths effectively.
  • Facilitate coordination with other youth-serving systems to achieve family and youth objectives.
  • Assist families in articulating their needs to treatment teams, fostering self-advocacy skills.
  • Encourage families to engage in health-related processes and advocate for their child's treatment.
  • Guide parents in developing advocacy skills to navigate youth-serving systems effectively.
  • Foster informed decision-making among parents, creating a supportive network with others who share similar experiences.
  • Equip families with knowledge and tools to manage their child's condition and promote self-management.
  • Educate families on mental health diagnoses, recovery journeys, and the role of services in managing symptoms.
  • Provide comprehensive support and education to caregivers, ensuring they are prepared to assist their child during transitions.
  • Highlight the importance of self-care for families to maintain overall health and wellness.
  • Promote family-guided services and interventions through self-advocacy.
  • Utilize personal experiences to inspire hope and progress towards recovery.
  • Assist families in setting and achieving their goals in collaboration with treatment teams.
  • Document all interactions in the Electronic Health Record as per agency standards.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and other relevant events as directed.
  • Complete necessary reports and documentation as assigned.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Completion of Certified Peer Specialist Parent training approved by relevant authorities within the specified timeframe.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and have personal experience parenting a child with significant emotional or mental health challenges.
  • Ability to connect with youth and parents effectively.
  • Basic understanding of mental health conditions and available support services.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Willingness to share personal experiences to support others in their recovery journey.
