General Overview:

The Behavior Specialist II (K-12) plays a vital role in delivering comprehensive, trauma-informed behavioral interventions and support.

This position is responsible for assisting in the formulation and execution of preventative and intervention strategies tailored for students facing behavioral challenges that hinder their social and academic development. Additionally, the specialist collaborates with school-based teams to promote effective practices for school-wide behavioral strategies.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluates and enhances instructional and behavioral programs for students
  • Facilitates professional development and collaborates with educators, paraprofessionals, and support staff to showcase effective practices, strategies, and techniques aimed at improving instruction for students with social, communication, behavioral, and learning difficulties
  • Works with staff across the division to foster an understanding of diverse methods to enhance student behavior
  • Conducts functional behavioral assessments and formulates behavioral intervention plans grounded in evidence-based practices
  • Aids in the design, execution, and follow-up of behavioral management programs to address behavioral and social issues
  • Provides individual and group counseling for targeted students, including socialization activities
  • Plans, coaches, and consults with classroom teachers regarding behavioral, social, or personal challenges affecting students
  • Develops and leads in-service training sessions on techniques for addressing behavioral, social, or personal challenges of students
  • Assists educators in creating safety plans and engages with families to strategize for student success as necessary
  • Supports the development and maintenance of home-school relations during student crises
  • Contributes to the establishment and upkeep of program evaluation procedures
  • Participates in weekly data collection, documentation, and analysis for effective planning
  • Collaborates on case management and team problem-solving with fellow behavioral specialists, agency personnel, and other relevant professionals regularly
  • Exhibits patience, respect, and an open-minded attitude towards students of various age groups and comprehends their unique situations; employs consulting skills to ensure the effective implementation and sustainability of intervention plans
  • Takes responsibility for personal professional growth by attending workshops, lectures, and training sessions to enhance job performance
  • Maintains confidentiality of work-related information and materials
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in special education, psychology, behavior disorders, social work, or counseling required
  • Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement in special education or counseling or Virginia Pupil Personnel Services License with endorsement as school social worker or school psychologist preferred
  • Minimum of five years of successful clinical or classroom experience working with students exhibiting challenging behaviors
  • Knowledge of contemporary trends and methodologies to address the needs of children with behavioral challenges
  • Extensive successful experience in analyzing, assessing behavior, and developing and implementing behavioral interventions

  • Experience in data collection, evaluation, development, and implementation of positive behavior intervention plans; familiarity with tiered intervention frameworks; knowledge of current best practices utilized in the full continuum of placement options for students with behavioral challenges
  • Proficiency in data tracking and collection, record management, and reporting methods
  • Demonstrated understanding of differentiated instruction
  • Expertise in developing and delivering staff development activities for individual schools and/or division-wide
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
  • Excellent time management skills and capacity to meet multiple deadlines; ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Bilingual/fluency in Spanish preferred
