Position Summary:

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS)/Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) provides essential non-clinical assistance to individuals drawing from shared life experiences. Acting as a positive role model, the PSS/CRM supports individuals in their personal recovery journeys. This role is part of a collaborative interdisciplinary team dedicated to facilitating self-defined and directed care.

The PSS/CRM will engage with individuals in the Emergency Department, offering a supportive presence and helping them to develop personalized care plans. They will also connect individuals with a comprehensive range of community resources, including harm-reduction education and peer support services.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver one-on-one peer support in person.
  • Collaborate actively with social workers and the ED team.
  • Participate in regular peer support supervision sessions.
  • Attend case conferences and staff meetings to communicate program objectives and individual needs.
  • Implement relevant regulations, policies, and procedures for peer-delivered services.
  • Support individuals in exploring strategies to enhance their overall wellness.
  • Assist in identifying and engaging with various community resources.
  • Provide educational opportunities to individuals regarding alternatives to emergency department use for non-emergent needs.
  • Support individuals in crisis situations, adhering to emergency protocols and fostering a trauma-informed environment.
  • Document and maintain peer-centric support summaries in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Share personal recovery experiences appropriately to inspire and motivate individuals served.
  • Advocate for individuals when necessary, respecting their rights and maintaining professional boundaries.
Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of continuous recovery from substance use disorders prior to hire. Lived experience with addiction and mental health recovery is highly valued.

Skills: Strong communication abilities, both written and verbal. Capacity to work independently and collaboratively with diverse populations.

Licensure/Certification: Required certifications include Peer Support Specialist or Peer Wellness Specialist (OHA Traditional Health Worker certification) and/or MHCBO CRM certification upon hire.
