Job Overview

Position: Peer Support Specialist/Certified Recovery Mentor

Compensation: $25 per hour

Work Schedule: 1.0 FTE, 4 days per week from 12pm to 8pm, with an additional shift from 4pm to 12am once a week.

Position Summary

The Peer Support Specialist (PSS)/Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) provides essential non-clinical assistance to individuals by drawing from shared life experiences, serving as a positive role model for those on their recovery journey. As part of an interdisciplinary team, the PSS/CRM plays a crucial role in supporting individuals in defining and directing their own care.

The PSS/CRM engages with individuals in the Emergency Department, offering a compassionate and supportive presence to those involved in the Substance Use Disorder Pilot. They facilitate follow-up support to connect individuals with a comprehensive range of community resources, including harm-reduction education and peer support services.

The role involves close collaboration with the Emergency Department team, including social workers and case managers, to ensure effective communication and coordination of care during daily briefings.

Access to Protected Health Information (PHI)

Access Level: Limited approved access to patient care areas and records containing PHI as necessary for job duties.

Qualifications

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Background Check: A criminal background check will be conducted in accordance with organizational policy; a criminal record does not automatically disqualify candidates.

Requirements: Candidates with lived experience of substance use disorder must have a minimum of 2 years of continuous recovery prior to hire.

Experience: Candidates should identify as having lived experience with addiction challenges, including both substance use and mental health issues. Experience with Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) and recovery is highly valued. Familiarity with trauma's impact on health and principles of recovery and consumer involvement is essential.

Licensure/Certification: Certification as a Peer Support Specialist or Peer Wellness Specialist (OHA Traditional Health Worker certification) and/or MHCBO CRM certification is required upon hire.

  • Proficiency in navigating electronic systems relevant to job functions.
Core Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one peer support in person.
  • Collaborate actively with social workers and the Adventist Health ED team.
  • Participate in regular peer support supervision and case conferences.
  • Implement policies and procedures related to peer-delivered services.
  • Support individuals in exploring strategies to enhance their wellness.
  • Assist in identifying and engaging community resources.
  • Offer educational opportunities to individuals regarding alternatives to emergency department use.
  • Provide crisis support as needed, adhering to emergency protocols.
  • Document and maintain peer-centric support summaries in compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Share personal recovery experiences to inspire and motivate individuals served.
  • Advocate for individuals within the organization and with external entities as appropriate.
  • Uphold the rights and responsibilities of individuals served while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Ensure safety for individuals served, staff, and property by adhering to safety regulations.
