Overview:
The City of Newport Beach is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Law Enforcement Officer. This role requires successful completion of a probationary period and a comprehensive Training Program with a recognized law enforcement agency, along with possession of a California POST Basic Certificate.

Eligibility:
If you have completed a California POST Academy but do not hold a CA POST Basic Certificate or Waiver, or if you are in the process of becoming a Law Enforcement Officer, you are encouraged to apply.

Retirement Benefits:
The City offers a competitive benefits package, including membership in the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS). The retirement formula is determined by the appointment date and membership status with CalPERS. Employees will be enrolled in the PERS Safety coverage group and are required to contribute 13.6% of their salary towards retirement benefits.

Selection Components:
1. Application Screening - Pass/Fail: Applications will be accepted continuously and reviewed weekly.
2. Interview - 100% of Overall Score: Interviews are tentatively scheduled monthly.
3. Physical Agility Test (PAT) - Pass/Fail: Scheduled on a monthly basis.

Selection Procedure:
Upon completion of the testing process, successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Invitations to begin the background process will be extended as positions become available. All candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, which includes checks of polygraph results, criminal history, credit history, driving records, military history, civil records, past and current employers, and drug and alcohol use.

Minimum Qualifications:
A combination of experience and education that would likely provide the necessary knowledge and abilities may be qualifying. A typical pathway to acquire the required knowledge and abilities includes:

Experience:
Successful completion of a probationary period and Field Training Program at another law enforcement agency, along with possession of a current California POST Basic certificate.

Education:
Equivalency to high school graduation is required. College-level coursework or specialized training in police science, psychology, public administration, or a related field is highly desirable.

License/Certificate:
A valid California driver's license and an acceptable driving record are mandatory due to the performance of field duties that require vehicle operation.

Additional Requirements:
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Minimum age at the time of appointment is 20.5 years. Candidates must undergo fingerprinting for local, state, and national background checks. Candidates must demonstrate good moral character as determined by a comprehensive background investigation.

Disaster Service Worker:
In accordance with Government Code Section 3100, employees of the City of Newport Beach are considered disaster service workers and may be required to respond in the event of a disaster.
