POSITION OVERVIEW
Under general oversight, this role encompasses a range of non-sworn law enforcement responsibilities aimed at supporting the Police Department, particularly in the realms of inmate management, record maintenance, and administrative support.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Inmate Management
- Responsible for the reception, booking, and ensuring the safety of individuals detained in the facility, including overseeing daily operations and the overall quality of the detention environment.
- Assist in the search process for detainees, complete necessary booking documentation, and conduct warrant verifications.
- Conduct routine inspections of the facility to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals in custody.
- Supervise visitation sessions for inmates.
- Prepare and distribute approved meals to detainees while maintaining control during transfers.
- Manage incoming calls and messages, maintaining communication with relevant personnel.
- Address inquiries, document complaints, and process bail and bond transactions.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Record Maintenance
- Handle routine and emergency service calls effectively.
- Engage with the public to facilitate information exchange.
- Maintain accurate records and files in compliance with established procedures and legal requirements.
- Operate data input and retrieval systems efficiently.
- Compile and analyze criminal statistics.
- Ensure the effective processing of records and related information.
- Log emergency communications and keep supervisors informed of critical situations.
- Perform clerical tasks related to record maintenance and operational logs.
- Adapt and enhance record-keeping systems to meet departmental needs.
- Undertake other assigned responsibilities.
Administrative Duties
- Ensure the availability of necessary supplies for smooth daily operations.
- Process various memos and documentation.
- Attend required meetings and contribute to discussions.
- Manage incoming mail, faxes, and financial transactions.
- Conduct fingerprinting for city applicants as part of background checks.
- Execute additional tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Required:
- Understanding of basic law enforcement principles and their application to non-sworn services.
- Familiarity with record-keeping practices and procedures.
- Proficiency in customer service techniques and effective communication.
- Strong organizational capabilities and familiarity with police record systems.
Skills Required:
- Ability to perform diverse non-sworn law enforcement tasks, including inmate management and record maintenance.
- Capacity to interact tactfully with law enforcement personnel, the public, and detainees.
- Clear verbal communication and retention of critical information.
- Capability to learn and adhere to departmental policies and regulations.
- Proficiency in operating office equipment and data entry systems.
Education and Experience:
- A combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills is essential. Typically, this includes educational attainment equivalent to high school graduation and the completion of a basic jail operations course within the probationary period.
Licenses/Certificates:
- A valid Class C California Driver's License with a clean driving record is mandatory and must be maintained throughout employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The role involves working in both office and detention environments, requiring regular interaction with the public, including individuals in distress. Employees may be required to work various shifts and must be capable of performing physical tasks associated with the position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The position necessitates the ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods, as well as the capacity to lift and carry moderate weights. Employees must be able to operate law enforcement and office equipment and communicate effectively.
