Law Enforcement Supervisor

Under general supervision, this role involves overseeing a range of routine and intricate public safety operations; managing police patrols, investigations, internal affairs, traffic enforcement, and associated law enforcement functions; serving as a division leader or Chief of Staff to the Police Chief; and performing related responsibilities as necessary.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Supervise and evaluate the performance of Police Sergeants, Community Services Division Supervisors, Police Officers, Community Services Officers, and support personnel in their designated tasks.
2. Assign and direct the activities of officers involved in patrol, traffic, or investigative operations, or may oversee other staff in records management, property and evidence handling, and custodial duties.
3. Address complaints or emergency reports and assess the necessity for police intervention; assist officers in managing challenging situations.
4. Review and coordinate the efforts of personnel engaged in communications, record maintenance, and prisoner care.
5. Aid in the planning and execution of departmental initiatives and protocols; prepare reports for higher management on incidents and special circumstances requiring administrative scrutiny.
6. Provide mentorship and training to subordinate officers and assess their performance.
7. Oversee officers in conducting preliminary and/or investigative work related to crimes and civil unrest.
8. Assume responsibilities of superior officers in their absence as assigned; work various shifts, including weekends and holidays as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Requires comprehensive knowledge of contemporary law enforcement principles, practices, techniques, and equipment; substantial understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and departmental policies; extensive familiarity with the local geography; proficiency in utilizing departmental tools and equipment; capability to plan, coordinate, supervise, and assess the work of subordinates; ability to perform physically demanding tasks; effective oral and written communication skills; ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors, community groups, and the public; and the capacity to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the necessary knowledge and abilities is acceptable.
Associate's degree or 60 units from an accredited institution; four years of professional law enforcement experience with a public agency, including two years in a supervisory role as a Police Sergeant.
Completion of advanced leadership training, such as P.O.S.T. Supervisory Leadership Institute (SLI), LAPD Leadership Program, or equivalent is preferred.Licenses/Certificates:
Must possess a valid Class C California Driver's License with a clean driving record, which must be maintained throughout employment.
Possession of a P.O.S.T. Supervisory Certificate or eligibility to obtain one within one year of promotion to Lieutenant.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The conditions described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
Environment: Work is conducted in a standard office environment, reactive emergency situations, natural or man-made disasters, and routine peacekeeping scenarios, with travel to various locations for meetings or to respond to significant crime scenes, disasters, or critical incidents. The employee may occasionally be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, extreme temperatures, electrical hazards, radiation, and vibrations. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate, but may occasionally be very loud due to sirens, firearm training, etc. Employees may be required to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, and may need to travel outside city limits for meetings.
Physical Requirements: Primary functions necessitate sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; walk, stand, or sit for extended periods; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; lift, carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate weights; operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movements and fine coordination, including the use of a computer keyboard; travel to other locations using various modes of transportation; operate and utilize specialized law enforcement tools and equipment; and verbally communicate to exchange information.
Vision: Must be able to see within the normal visual range, with or without correction.
Hearing: Must be able to hear within the normal audio range, with or without correction.
