POSITION SUMMARY
Under general oversight, this role encompasses a range of non-sworn law enforcement responsibilities to assist the Police Department, particularly in the realms of inmate management, police documentation, and administrative support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Inmate Management
- Responsible for the intake, care, and safety of individuals held in the police department's custody, ensuring compliance with facility standards.
- Aid personnel in conducting searches, completing intake procedures, and managing necessary documentation.
- Conduct regular inspections of the facility to ensure the safety and well-being of those incarcerated.
- Supervise inmate visitations and manage meal distribution while maintaining control during transfers.
- Handle communication via phone and radio, ensuring accurate message relay and response to inquiries.
- Document complaints and inquiries, processing bail and bond as required.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned.
Police Documentation
- Manage and route emergency and routine service calls.
- Interact with the public to facilitate information exchange.
- Maintain accurate records and files in accordance with legal requirements.
- Operate data entry and retrieval systems effectively.
- Compile and report criminal statistics.
- Assist in the processing of various records and related information.
- Log emergency messages and keep supervisors updated on critical situations.
- Perform clerical duties related to logs, records, and forms management.
- Adapt and enhance record-keeping systems to meet departmental needs.
- Execute other assigned duties.
Administrative Support
- Ensure the availability of supplies for efficient daily operations.
- Process various memos and documentation.
- Attend required meetings to stay informed.
- Manage incoming mail, faxes, and financial transactions.
- Conduct fingerprinting for city applicants as part of background checks.
- Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Required:
- Understanding of basic law enforcement principles and their application to non-sworn services.
- Familiarity with record-keeping practices and procedures.
- Proficiency in customer service techniques and effective communication.
- Strong organizational capabilities and attention to detail.
Skills Required:
- Ability to perform diverse non-sworn law enforcement duties effectively.
- Capable of interacting tactfully with law enforcement personnel, the public, and detainees.
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to retain detailed information.
- Proficient in operating office equipment and data entry systems.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to follow instructions accurately.
Education and Experience:
A combination of training and experience that provides the necessary knowledge and skills is essential. Typically, this includes educational attainment equivalent to high school graduation. Candidates must be at least 18 years old and complete a basic jail operations course within the probationary period.
Licenses/Certificates:
A valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained throughout employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The role requires the ability to work in both office and jail environments, with regular public interaction and exposure to challenging situations. Employees may be required to work various shifts, including 12-hour periods. Physical demands include the ability to walk, stand, or sit for extended periods, as well as the capacity to lift and carry moderate weights.
Vision and Hearing:
Employees must have normal vision and hearing capabilities, with or without correction, to perform essential job functions.
