Position Overview:

The Phlebotomist is accountable for executing all responsibilities associated with specimen collection, receipt, and referrals. This role is crucial in ensuring the accurate and timely processing of patient specimens.

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline is a leading acute care medical institution in the region, offering a comprehensive array of diagnostic and surgical specialty services, particularly in cardiac, cancer, and stroke care. It stands as the primary emergency facility in the vicinity and is recognized as the only Level II Trauma Center in the Coastal Bend, with a team of professionals trained specifically in emergency medical services.

  • The facility includes a modern Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and surgical suites.
  • It serves as a teaching institution in partnership with the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center College of Medicine.
  • Accredited as a Chest Pain Center.

• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards including CAP, JCAHO, OSHA, infection control, safety, and the protection of health information.

• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the collection area and restock supplies as needed.

• Collaborate with the team lead for the procurement of departmental supplies.

• Execute all duties of a phlebotomist, including specimen collection, receipt, and sending specimens to outside laboratories.

• Prepare specimens for external laboratory referrals, including necessary documentation and logistics.

• Conduct all patient specimen collections, ensuring adherence to specimen integrity requirements.

• Exhibit strong communication skills while interacting with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

• Utilize the laboratory information system for documentation and order entry tasks.

• Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned, including on-call duties, inventory management, and cross-training.

• Complete performance evaluations and competency assessments in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

  • High School diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Completion of a Phlebotomy, Medical Laboratory, or Medical Assistant program that includes phlebotomy is preferred.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, data entry, and organizational skills is essential.

B. Experience

  • Preferred one year of experience in phlebotomy.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • Certification from a Nationally Accredited Program is preferred.
