Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting various clinical tests within designated laboratory sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, which include quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, the role involves clerical tasks, general duties, and phlebotomy related to the laboratory's daily operations. The technician also provides and dispenses blood products as requested by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Ensures that the organization’s philosophy and core values are reflected in the service provided to patients.

• Specimen Collection and Processing – performs blood draws via venipuncture and/or fingerstick, accurately identifies and labels specimens; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedure manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes appropriate measures; reports critical values in accordance with policies; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory testing in the following areas: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.

• Conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control in compliance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; performs and records performance improvement metrics and communicates findings.

• Engages in routine and periodic preventative maintenance with proper documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Takes initiative for professional development and continuing education.

• Assists in the training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Complies with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, security guidelines, and regulations regarding hazardous materials.

• Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Successfully completes annual competency assessments by the assigned deadline.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as per CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

AND

  • Laboratory training, which includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other HHS-approved organizations.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State licensure is required in certain regions.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, where applicable).
