Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting laboratory tests across various sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, such as quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician is also tasked with identifying abnormal critical values and adhering to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, this position involves clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties essential for the smooth operation of the laboratory. The technician will also provide and manage blood products as requested by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Upholds the company’s philosophy and core values in all customer interactions.

• Specimen Collection and Processing – proficiently obtains blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manages pneumatic tube systems; follows established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the operation of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; communicates critical values in accordance with policies; conducts tests within designated timeframes; performs laboratory testing in sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.

• Conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control measures in compliance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; performs and records Performance Improvement metrics and reports findings.

• Engages in routine preventative maintenance and documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Takes initiative for professional development and continuing education.

• Assists in the training of new staff and students in laboratory practices.

• Complies with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, security guidelines, and procedures for handling hazardous materials.

• Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

A. Education and Skills

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

AND

  • Laboratory training must include completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

B. Experience

  • No experience is required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other HHS-approved organizations.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State licensure is required in Louisiana.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
