Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician I is responsible for conducting laboratory tests across various sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, which include quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, the position involves clerical duties, general tasks, and phlebotomy related to the laboratory's daily functions. The technician also manages the provision of blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

The Heart Network is acknowledged as one of the top cardiovascular hospitals in the nation, providing advanced diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitative cardiac services all in one location.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the core competencies of the organization: Self-Leadership, Leadership of Others, or Leadership of Leaders.

• Conducts specimen collection, handling, and processing—collecting blood samples through venipuncture or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates the pneumatic tube system; follows established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Manages result reporting—identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values in accordance with policies; performs tests within designated timeframes; conducts laboratory testing in areas such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.

• Performs and documents quality control measures according to established policies, adhering to guidelines set by regulatory bodies.

• Engages in routine and scheduled preventative maintenance, documenting actions taken; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies and reagents; reviews and updates policy and procedure manuals.

• Takes initiative for professional development and continuing education.

• Assists in training new staff and students in laboratory protocols.

• Complies with standards set by regulatory agencies.

• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, and guidelines for handling hazardous materials.

• Utilizes laboratory information systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Completes annual competency assessments in a timely manner.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent training and experience as defined by regulatory standards.
  • Completion of a military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, holding the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses or 24 semester hours in science courses with specified chemistry and biology requirements.

AND

  • Laboratory training through completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State licensure may be required in certain locations.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible, with certification to be completed within one year of hire.
