Individuals in this position identify abnormal critical values and adhere to established protocols for informing healthcare professionals of results. Additionally, this role includes clerical, general, and phlebotomy responsibilities associated with daily laboratory operations, as well as the provision of blood products as required by medical personnel.

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline is a leading acute care medical institution in the region, offering a comprehensive array of diagnostic and surgical specialty services, particularly in cardiac, cancer, and stroke care. It serves as the primary emergency facility in the vicinity and is recognized as the only Level II Trauma Center in the Coastal Bend, staffed with medical professionals trained in emergency care.

  • The Pavilion and the Critical Care Center feature a state-of-the-art Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and surgical suites.

The Shoreline campus is a premier facility housing many of the region's most essential and esteemed programs, including a Primary Stroke Center, a nationally accredited Cancer Center, and a nationally recognized Chest Pain Center. The Pavilion at CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi-Shoreline encompasses the CHRISTUS Spohn Heart Network, acknowledged as one of the top 100 cardiovascular hospitals in the United States. The Heart Institute provides advanced diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitative cardiac services all in one location.

Key Responsibilities:


• Fulfill the expectations of the relevant OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing – collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, accurately identifies and labels samples; operates the pneumatic tube system; adheres to procedures for processing and testing specimens, including the operation of various centrifuges; obtains other designated patient specimens as outlined in procedure manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or improbable results and takes appropriate measures; reports critical values in accordance with Policy and Procedure; conducts tests within established timeframes; performs laboratory testing, if designated, in the following sections: Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching, antibody identification, and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers following established protocols.

• Conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control in accordance with Policy & Procedure, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; performs and records Performance Improvement indicators and reports findings.

• Undertakes routine daily and periodic preventative maintenance with documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; orders (or informs assigned associate) and replenishes supplies/reagents; reviews policy & procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards expired items.

• Takes initiative for pursuing professional development and ongoing education.

• Assists in the training of new associates and students in laboratory practices.

• Complies with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Adheres to established protocols for safety, infection control, security, compliance, and the handling of hazardous materials.

• Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) appropriately to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Completes annual competency assessments successfully and by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

  • Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined in the CLIA regulation 42CFR:
  • Successfully completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holds the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician);

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that include six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination;

AND

  • Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLS, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by NAACLS, or other organizations approved by HHS.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, which must include a clinical rotation through the following sections of the laboratory: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years. (This meets the AMT MLT eligibility requirement)

AND

  • Less than five years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT).

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS required.
  • If certification with an expiration date is held, the certification must be maintained and kept current.
  • Louisiana requires State Licensure.
  • New Graduate that is Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
