POSITION SUMMARY

The role of the Animal Care Specialist involves overseeing the operations of the animal control facility and executing related responsibilities as assigned. Under guidance, the attendant is tasked with ensuring the health and well-being of all animals housed at the facility. The incumbent will report directly to the Animal Control Supervisor.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Upholding a sanitary environment by cleaning and feeding all animals on a daily basis
  • Utilizing appropriate cleaning agents
  • Engaging with the public and addressing inquiries
  • Issuing citations and licenses
  • Collecting and documenting fees and fines
  • Managing the impound and release of animals
  • Administering vaccinations as necessary
  • Maintaining accurate records
  • Facilitating adoptions to suitable homes in accordance with established procedures
  • Managing inventory of supplies
  • Creating public awareness through signage and informational materials
  • Collaborating with volunteers
  • Working independently under various conditions, including weekends and holidays
QUALIFICATIONS & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in animal care and handling
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Relevant federal, state, and local laws regarding animal control and welfare
  • Functions of related agencies
  • Legal responsibilities
  • Animal handling and restraint techniques
  • Common animal diseases and their control
  • Public health protocols in animal control
  • General safety practices
  • Basic emergency first aid
  • Fundamental mathematics
ABILITY TO:
  • Learn and apply relevant laws and policies regarding animal care and control
  • Safely manage animals to prevent harm
  • Provide emergency first aid when necessary
  • Recognize normal and abnormal animal behaviors
  • Work effectively in challenging environments
  • Communicate clearly and effectively
  • Maintain detailed records and filing systems
  • Meet established deadlines
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships

  • Successful completion of a background investigation
  • Potential to serve as a Disaster Service Worker during emergencies
