Purpose:

The Department of Communication at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic institution, invites applications for Lecturer positions (non-tenure track) to instruct courses in Communication Studies. Potential courses include Comm 1 (Communication in Everyday Life), Comm 2 (Public Speaking), Comm 3 (Digital Storytelling), Comm 4 (Introduction to Communication Research), Comm 12 (Technology and Communication), and Research Methods (qualitative and quantitative).

Assignments will be tailored based on the candidate's academic credentials and departmental needs. Santa Clara University operates on a quarter system, with each quarter lasting 10 weeks, followed by an 11th week for final assessments.

This is an applicant pool; hence, positions are filled as necessary. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching no more than 2 courses per quarter and a maximum of four courses across the fall, winter, and spring quarters. All classes will be conducted in-person; however, if health conditions in the county or university change, the successful candidate may be required to deliver part of the course online.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • (1) A Terminal Degree (Ph.D./MFA) in Communication or a closely-related discipline is preferred. Candidates who are ABD or hold a Master's Degree, along with relevant academic experience in Communication or a related field (5-7 years of collegiate or professional teaching), will be considered.
  • (2) Candidates without an advanced degree but with exceptional professional experience in communication studies and proven teaching success at the collegiate level will be considered.
  • (3) Strong communication skills are essential.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • (1) Experience with inclusive teaching practices that promote SCU's goals of diversity and equity.
  • (2) Experience in teaching and mentoring a diverse group of undergraduate students.
RESPONSIBILITIES:

TEACHING (100%).

Teaching responsibilities encompass but are not limited to fulfilling all obligations associated with assigned courses, including:
  • a. Managing a course load of no more than two courses per quarter and no more than four per academic year;
  • b. Conducting and attending all assigned class meetings punctually and prepared, demonstrating mastery of the subject matter and effective presentation skills;
  • c. Assigning and assessing coursework that aligns with the course description and learning outcomes, providing timely feedback to students;
  • d. Holding regular weekly office hours on campus;
  • e. Submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline;
  • f. Administering numerical and narrative evaluations for all courses;
  • g. Where applicable, teaching from an approved syllabus for the University Core courses assigned or collaborating with the Chair to develop an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
Service (0%):
  • This position does not entail any service duties. Attendance at department meetings or activities is optional.
