Job Description

GE is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to join our team as a Machinist Technician. This is a unique opportunity to combine academic studies with on-the-job training to develop the fundamentals required to become a skilled machinist with GE Power machine tools.

Program Overview
  • This specialized 2-year program combines on-the-job training with coursework through Hudson Valley Technical College.
  • Students spend 4-days a week in the classroom and 1-day onsite training during the school year.
  • A mandatory internship during the summer term provides hands-on experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Applicants will undergo an entry exam and interview process prior to employment.
  • Apprentices are paid for on-the-job training, and tuition and books are paid by GE through sponsorship.
  • A 2-year retention agreement is required to maintain program sponsorship.
Essential Responsibilities
  • Work from drawings, sketches, and other instructions to perform machining operations such as mill, turn, face, bore, groove, contour, dovetail, drill, tap, etc. to precise mechanical tolerances.
  • Assist in taking and recording various measurements/runouts of components.
  • Report any conflicts to the Shift Supervisor.
  • Complete daily point of work risk assessments and Safety Observations.
  • Record and report daily time.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, including good housekeeping practices of assigned work area and compliance with all applicable environmental, health, and safety policies.
  • Perform tooling set-up and maintenance activities as directed.
  • Maintain a classroom GPA of B or better.
  • Pass technical ability reviews during the summer internship period.
Qualifications/Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 1-year work experience or education in a machining-specific trade area.
Eligibility Requirements
  • Ability to score at least a 75% on the entry exam.
  • Ability, with or without accommodation, to pass the site functional test lift/push/pull.
  • Ability and willingness to work overtime as required.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional weekend shifts.
  • Ability and willingness to work on an off-shift (2nd: 3pm-11pm, 3rd: 11pm-7am).
  • Ability and willingness to wear personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs, and safety shoes.
  • Ability and willingness to take a pre-employment test and submit to a technical interview to maintain program sponsorship.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
Desired Characteristics
  • Able to read blueprints.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Able to use, read, and understand measuring tools.
  • Knowledge of common PC tools, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Reading comprehension; understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work-related documents.
  • Able to follow written instructions and take verbal instructions.
  • Able to work with computerized shop floor tools, including but not limited to: vouchering systems, on-line quality programs, and payroll management tools.
