Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Technician to join our team at GE Aviation. As a key member of our Combustion Lab, you will play a critical role in the development of new combustion technologies for our gas turbines and jet engines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in designing, building, and instrumenting sophisticated test rigs to evaluate the performance of combustion systems.
  • Conduct experiments using a variety of measurement tools and experimental techniques in fluid dynamics and thermal systems, including thermocouples, RTD's, infrared cameras, flow meters, and pressure probes.
  • Procure parts and materials to build prototype mechanical and electrical hardware, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Assemble complex prototype models for testing in combustion flow rigs, demonstrating attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
  • Maintain and upgrade large experimental systems, which may require high pressures, elevated temperatures, and large flows, ensuring optimal performance and safety.
  • Operate compressor systems, preheaters, and exhauster/blowers, adhering to established procedures and protocols.
Requirements
  • Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field, with a minimum of 3 years of experience in laboratory or research work, or a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • A demonstrated record of utilizing basic designs to build quality hardware, with a focus on precision and attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of flow characterization equipment, thermocouples, pressure transducers, and data acquisition systems, with a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Familiarity with machine shop equipment, such as mills, grinders, and lathes, and the ability to operate them safely and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and use service documentation, including technical manuals and procedures.
  • Ability to work during first shift, with the possibility of working 2nd or 3rd shift under certain circumstances.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to the nature of the work done at GE Aviation.
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
  • Must be willing to undergo a background investigation and take a drug test as part of the selection process.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience with flow or thermal experiments, which will be strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work with periodic guidance on tasks and innovate, demonstrating a willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Ability to program data acquisition software, including Labview, and a basic understanding of programming principles.
  • Rapid acquisition of new skills and technologies, with a focus on staying up-to-date with industry developments.
  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt, or a willingness to pursue certification.
  • Ability to work well with diverse teams, including PhDs, machinists, and vendors, and a strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, with a focus on resolving complex issues and improving processes.
  • Excellent time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in parallel and prioritize effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a focus on clear and concise communication.
  • Excellent teaming skills, with a strong commitment to collaboration and teamwork.
Compensation and Benefits

The weekly range for this position is $1,400 - $2,000 USD, with the specific weekly range offered to a candidate influenced by factors such as experience, education, and work location.
